joXware QNA (Quake Name Animator) Version 1.0 - 12.11.1996 (c) Jonas P. (joXonoX@berlin.snafu.de) joXonoX's Quake Vaults: http://www.snafu.de/~joxonox/quake/ ----------------------------------------------------------- What do I have to know? ----------------------- The use of this program is at your own risk. I don't think that something bad can happen but I will take no responsibility. Hope you understand that. What is this? ------------- With this little animation studio :) you can easily create your own animated ASCII sequences which are played in the fraglist at the end of levels on quake servers in the internet (after pressing a specific key). You also can use it to create names with brown chars, yellow numbers and other symbols from the quake charset. How to install QNA: ------------------- Best is if you copy QNA.EXE and QNA.SCR to your QUAKE\ID1 directory. That's it. How to run QNA: --------------- Type 'QNA' at the DOS prompt (in the ID1 directory). To load a script file type 'QNA '. QNA can also search *.CFG (or other) files for NAME commands, just put it in the command line and the names will be filtered out. Type 'QNA QNA.SCR' to see my demo animation. How to create animations: ------------------------- If you start QNA you'll see a table with 4 colums and 17 rows. You can edit each field. There you can put several quake-player-names one after the other, each with a little modification, so if you change thru all the names with a delay (WAITs) inbetween, an animation will appaer. This program will create a script file for Quake if you press F8. You then have to bind this script to a key. (CAUTION! If you run this script, you can hardly move, so it only makes sense to do it at the and of levels where everybody sees the fraglist or for show off purposes :) With the cursor keys you can navigate thru the entries. Press to edit them (I'd suggest to start with the upper left one :). If there is something in the field it appears in the edit window (at the bottom), if there is nothing then QNA will look in the field before and take this entry and you can edit/alter it. You will see, very usefull. If you're not in edit mode and press F3 the entry at the cursor will be copied into the clipboard. Press F4 to insert it somewhere (cursor position). Press to delete an entry. Press to insert the last deleted entry. Press +/- to set the speed of the animation (actually the amount of WAIT commands between each name change). Default is 4, less than that hardly makes sense. Be aware that with PING 300 and 4 WAITs every 2nd or 3rd 'frame' may be skipped. You'll have to make your own experiances. If you are in edit mode (pressed ) you can use: - almost all ASCII chars in white and brown. - Numbers in yellow (also '[' and ']' in yellow). Press F5 (white), F6 (brown) and F7 (yellow) to switch between the colors. At the right in the edit window is an astrisk (*) that shows the current color. Note that you can't type any letters (only numbers and '[' / ']' when in yellow mode. The following chars can be used with and 1-9, Q, W and E (look at the bottom of the screen in QNA!) (Note that the symbols that show how they look in QNA will ONLY look right if you watch this text in DOS mode!) - A "fader" like in the options (e.g. to control the screensize) In QNA they look like this: Ì Í Î ¹ - A brown arrow (pointing right) In QNA it looks like this: ¯ - A white arrow (pointing left) In QNA it looks like this: ® - A white and a yellow dot (centered) In QNA it looks like this: þ - 3 Parts of a Bar (left, middle, right) In QNA they look like this: Ã Ä ´ Press to toggle between insert and overwrite mode. Use the standard editing keys (HOME, END, DEL, BACKSPACE, CURSOR LEFT/RIGHT). In QUAKE it will all look a little different. Also there will be no small letters. They're all capitals with different size! How to save the work: --------------------- At the bottom you can see a file name with "Out File (F9)" below. Press F9 to change the name and F8 to save with this name. You can reload these files by adding the filename to the command line when starting QNA (yet the speed will be forgotten). How to use the Scripts in QUAKE: -------------------------------- Lets say you created ANI.SCR and want to show it when you press 'Q'. Create the following line in your AUTOEXEC.CFG (located at \QUAKE\ID1): BIND Q "EXEC ANI.SCR" Now when a level ends and everybody sees the fraglist press 'Q'. (You can make several animations and bind them to different keys.) How to test the Scripts: ------------------------ Right in QNA press F12 (note that the speed will not be exactly the same as in Quake). In Quake go to the console and type: DEATHMATCH 1 MAP START (Or start a deathmatch game via the menu). Once in the game hold down and press the key you specified in the AUTOEXEC.CFG. (On a Quake server nobody will see all the 'xx RENAMED TO yy' messages at the top, not even you.) LIST OF KEY COMMANDS: --------------------- (F1) - Help (not yet implemented) F3 - Copy entry (at cursor) to clipboard F4 - Copy clipboard to cursor F8 - Save (with the name at 'Out File (F9)') F9 - Change save file name F12 - Test the animation. Note that small letters in QNA will be small capital letters in Quake. +/- - Change the speed (amount of WAITs). More=slower. Be carefull with numbers below 4. DEL - Delete entry. (can be restored with BACKSPACE) BACKSPACE - Insert the last deleted (with DEL) entry. ENTER - Edit the entry (go to edit mode) Keys in edit mode: F5 - White letters, numbers and symbols F6 - Brown letters, numbers and symbols F7 - Yellow numbers, '[' and ']' ALT 1-8,Q/W/E - Special chars. See section "How to create animations" above and at the bottom of the screen of QNA. INS - Toggle between insert and overwrite mode. DEL/BACKSPACE/HOME/END - Like you are used to them. What else: ---------- I will make this program a little better in future.
