WinDefender is a program that allows you to secure and
protect your confidential data, your files and folders
in your computer.
WinDefender will help you keep your confidential
information on your Windows 95/98 computers
more safe and more secure.
WinDefender provides you with a service to keep your
valuable files encrypted on your hard drive. When you
want to use them you enter the password and then
WinDefender will automatically (on-the-fly) decrypt them
when reading from the hard drive (floppies, cd-rom, etc.)
and encrypt them when writing to. This will occur
absolutely transparently for you - WinDefender uses a
special low-level driver which can work fine with any file.
Usually you received this version of WinDefender in a ZIP file
(for example, WDEFEN.ZIP). You can install it as follows:
Before usage you have to setup files and folders you wish
protect or/and encrypt. Start WinDefender and do this.
You will be able to set access rights for any folder or file
in the system (for example, you can allow only reading the
files from the folder but not writing or deleting).
You can hide a folder on the hard drive (just hide!) so
no one else will be able to see it!.
To begin to work with your encrypted files, all
you need is to start WinDefender and enter the password.
To turn on protection for the files/folders you have to
start WinDefender from the Start menu or select autostart
option from the Preferences.
For encrypting WinDefender uses very strong algorithm
based on well-known ans stable GOST 28147-89. This algorithm
depends on the password, therefore without knowing
this password it is impossible to decrypt any files.
First time you'll start WinDefender you will see the Unlock Dialog.
This dialog prevents unauthorized access to the WinDefender. Enter
the password you had installed.
After you have entered the password, it will be verified (with the
checksum of the proper password) and you'll see the main window of
the WinDefender on the screen (if the password is correct).
WinDefender is keeping a number of the objects (files and folders
that are protected) in the list, but if you are running WinDefender
first time you'll see the only two objects - system.dat and user.dat
that are system registry files protected by WinDefender from being deleted
(this behavior may be changed anytime from the menu Preferences).
Now it will be showed how to add new folder to the WinDefender's list
and setup all necessary protection for it. Click menu "File" and select
the command "Add folder".
You'll be prompted with the dialog to select a folder for adding to
the list. Select a folder you would like to protect and click "OK".
After it you'll be prompted with the dialog for the necessary
protection for the folder.
If you have selected the option "Produce enciphering" in the
dialog "Settings for the object", you'll be prompted with the dialog
that will show you the encryption progress of your files in the folder.
That's all! The folder is in the list and WinDefender is doing the
real-time protection for it. If you have selected encryption of the
folder this is the time for you to sure that you can freely access your
encrypted files from any application (Explorer, MS Word, Excel, etc.)
Anytime you can change protection you have installed. Simply
right-click mouse on the object and switch the protection.
If you require permanently delete the folder from the list - select it in
the list and press "DEL" button. If the folder had been encrypted you'll
be prompted with the confirmation to decrypt the folder. Select "Yes".
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you wish uninstall WinDefender you should delete
all necessary folders from the list and decrypt it if necessary.
It doesn't do automatically.
Open "Contol Panel" from the Windows Taskbar Start menu or
from the "My Computer" on the desktop, select "Add/Remove Programs"
and press the ENTER key. From the list of installed components
select WinDefender, click "Add/Remove" button and follow the
instructions displayed.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have WinDefender running do the exit from
(select "Stop all services and exit" from the main menu)
before uninstallation procedure.
