The Import Settings Dialog controls where SSChart will look for data when it needs to update a chart. SSChart will attempt to retrieve data from the internet sources or from import files or both (or neither) according to the settings in this dialog. SSChart will attempt to update the chart when either the { Data | Update } or { Data | Reload } menu items are selected, or when { Data | Auto Update } is checked and a symbol is loaded for which the data is not current, or when a symbol is loaded for which SSChart does not have any saved data. |
The Import Settings Dialog lets you select a list of directories which the program should search for import files when a symbol is typed into a chart. Items can be added to the Import Directories list by pressing [Browse]. The Time Span and the Data Format Specification should be set as described in the Import File Settings Dialog. The Time Span group contains an additional item which can be used to disable an Import Directory item temporary. If disabled the directory will not be searched. Any changes to an item in the Import Directory list must be saved by pressing [Modify] or they will be lost when selecting another item or closing the dialog box. If the filename part of an import directory listed above contains an asterisk ("*") the symbol is substituted for the asterisk when looking for the import file. Therefore in the example above if you typed "IBM" in a daily chart, SSChart would first look the the Daily historic data internet source that was currently set in the { Data | Internet Sources } dialog, and if it failed to get data there, would try the file C:\SSChart\IMPORT\IBM.txt. If the file existed it would try to import the data using the "Use File Header Line" data specification which would expect the first line of the file to be a header line specifies the field order in the file. If instead of "*.txt" in the example above you specified a full filename like "market.txt" for example, the SSChart would look in the file for any symbol it was trying to import. In this case you could have data for the entire market in a single file and extract what was needed. (The data format in the file must contain the symbol in this case, so a match can be found). The [Enable Web] item controls whether data will be retrieved from the internet at all. The [Enable Import] item controls whether any of the import directories are searched at all. Therefore if both items are disabled then the only source for data will be existing binary data files. The settings in this dialog do not affect the importing of data with the { File | Import } menu selection, only the implied loading of data when you change the symbol in a chart. The order in the list controls the order of where the looks for data. Make sure you specify this correctly or you may get data from the internet when you intended to get it from an import file or vise versa. The status line at the bottom of the main windows shows where the data came from. |
