Protocol Header

Versions of the protocol

MM3WebAssistant Professional: A faster data transmission is obtained with HTTP 1.1.

Reference

Standard setting causes the browser to transmit the present URL (reference) at requesting another URL. This setting can be kept, or can be set so that no reference can be transmitted, or a reference can only be transmitted if it is in the same domain. You can thus limit the process of passing on data on your browsing habits.

Browser name (User-Agent)

At standard setting, the browser will transmit its name to the HTTP server. This setting can be kept, or can be set to transmit a different name or no name at all. You can thus limit the process of passing on data on your browsing habits.

Cookie

If the options activated, cookies will be transmitted to the browser respectively to the server. You can thus limit the process of passing on data on your browsing habits.

Marker

Marking locally available URL

All resources available in active archives can be marked (e.g. green) when surfing. So you get a fast summary, which resources already archived and thus local are available.

Our home page shows without and with the marking.

The marking can be used in the mode offline and in the mode online. The marking per default is green or can be defined with a stylesheet.

Offline Mode

Only the locally available resources can be shown in this mode. Therefore the markings simplify surfing considerably.
If you are interested in the contents of not available resources then change to the on-line mode.

MM3WebAssistant Professional: At first every missing URL can be collected. These URLs can be loaded later in the online mode.

Online Mode

The marking shows to you, which resources you have already visit. This completes the history function of the browser.

Highlighting the changes between new and locally available HTML pages in the online mode

If you are interested in the differences of a page since the last archiving, then you activate the function. When surfing in the on-line mode newly available texts are then marked. The marking is carried out per default blue or can be defined over a sample.

At Private Edition there are reductions at all functions due to the simpler treatment.

Cache Archiv

Define folder

The MM3WebAssistants cache consists of up to five folders (specified by topics) where the Internet sections can be filed. It is necessary that the folder of the program MM3WebAssistant is used at least.

Options/Cache

Other folders may be added to the cache using Add. On the field then selected a folder can manually be entered. A folder can alternatively interactively be selected with the button Browse.. (only available with Java 2 Platform). You can delete a selected folder with the button Delete.

We recommend to use one of these folders as a read/write-enable working directory. All other folders could then be assigned read-enable only. Simply by copying from the working directory you can then compile folders for specific tasks or subjects.

In the example above, four folders are given: The folder /cache/ as working directory and three folders specified by subject (job, finance, hobby). By exchanging the entries you can compile any number of specific folders, which can also be stored on another storage device, like CD ROM.

Moreover, the MM3WebAssistant also can be started from a CD ROM. It is not necessary to install the program on a harddisk! Only a virtual machine must have been installed on the computer or in the network.

Note:

One cache archive may not contain any other cache archives!

For example the following structure should be avoided:

1. Archiv: /cache/

2. Archiv: /cache/Hobby/

Web pages storing

At activation of the option Store web pages the files are put down in the directory with access of write.

MM3WebAssistant Professional: Text files can be compressed.

Frett

The Frett (Ferret) traces additional links, starting from the HTML site currently visible, to be able to offer them from the cache when further browsing is executed. However, this takes up a large proportion of bandwidth and memory space. Depending on the application the links to be retrieved can be specified as follows:

Frett traces following links

Within the structure

  • in actual directory and subdirectories only
  • within subdomain only
  • within domain only
  • all domains

HTML files and following types

  • all
  • images
  • PDF files
  • ZIP files

At Private Edition there are reductions at all functions due to the simpler treatment.

Mirroring

Starting from a HTML page you can mirror complete HTML sites in an adjustable depth with this option.

To this you enter the start page with URL.

Then select a required Depth of tracking links.

Please note that you need with higher depth a larger proportion of bandwidth and hard disk space. Often isn't foreseeable how many HTML pages are actually tracked and loaded. Therefore depending on application it can be necessary, restricting tracking of links. You can specified a limitation of tracked links with a seleceted Options/Frett. In connection with this, the re-use time of files is a broader essential parameter (see Main Menu). The more higherly you select the re-use time, the less files are loaded from the internet. Depending on which files are already available in your archives. Please note that wherefore the settings of the Options/Frett option will also be used. Changes in settings will be effected only after they have been saved (button Apply or OK or Store settings ).

With the button Start starts the mirroring and the loaded HTML pages are protocoled. Delete the output of the protocol window by pressing the Clear button and cancel mirroring by pressing the Cancel button.

Legend of the protocol:

The current depth, the number still to be loaded HTML pages in this depth, and the HTML pages already loaded down will be protocoled. At the end the number of HTML pages which are loaded from the cache and from the internet will be displayed.

Note:

Pages includes JavaScript or Flash for example will possibly not loaded correctly.
You can afterwards archive these faulty pages by surfing in the on-line mode.

At Private Edition there are reductions at all functions due to the simpler treatment.

MM3WebAssistant Professional: The HTML pages loaded newly can in addition be logged in a list.

Filter

Contents filter

Resources not relevant to you can be filtered to avoid unnecessary costs for data transmission and memory space. For automated filtering, restrictive operation has been chosen to make sure you are not denied contents you may find interesting. According to our analysis it may make sense not to select the general browser setting not to load images. We would rather advise to specify subdirectories and subdomains from which GIF images must not be loaded. If there are contents of entire domains or subdomains you are not interested in, you can also specify these.

The MM3WebAssistant can be used for many different purposes. It is difficult therefore to give any specific recommendations for filter settings. Possible applications may concern family filters or ad filters. For advertising purposes, GIF images are often loaded from specific subdirectories (e.g. advertising, adverts, ads) or other files from specific subdomains (e.g. ad.). The filter setting prevents files to be loaded from the areas specified.

To configurate your application area, take note of the areas from which undesired files are loaded and specify these as filters.

Wouldn't you like to load any URL which contain a sub-folder with the character string /ad/ for example? Please, enter this in the field sub-folder. Would you like filter several subdirectories then you indicate this in a new line (according to /advertising/)

Option/Filter

Test

After the above configuration of the filter you call the page with the URL http://www.mm3tools.com/ad/.

You get then following HTML page:

Test the filtering "ad"

Note:

Generally you don't receive this detailed display. But the areas to be filtered in a HTML side are indicated as not available. This is dependent on your Browser and the configuration.

Please note:

Providing a large variety of options, the MM3WebAssistant has not been conceived as an ads filter. It must also be noted that advertising today is a considerable driving force for the development and maintenance of many products and does provide information. We have therefore refrained from a pre-configuration as an ad blocker. This is also why the program has no option to use image sizes for filtering: These same sizes are sometimes used to serve the offer. Filtering in this respect will therefore not contribute to a more efficient use of the Internet.

Sidebar

The command ls can be alternatively displayed also in a sidebar of the browser.

For the browser Netscape, Mozilla or Opera see Surf/Sidebar.

The Sidebar corresponds to the search window of the MS Internet Explorer. The URL needed for this has to be entered in. This URL can be found out by using the MM3WebAssistant in the offline mode and opening the search window. The error message issued will contain the URL. This URL can also be found in the browser protocol.

Local

Action to be taken when URL is not available

This option specifies the behavior if a requested URL is not available. The following three settings are possible:

  • The standard error message of the browser is displayed.
  • An HTML page with a failure message is displaying. In addition, the local table of contents, preferably containing the URL requested, can be fetched (see Surf).
  • The directory of contents is displayed automatically.

MM3WebAssistant Professional: All requested URL can be logged in different variants.
