                                      ]I[

                              a HORNET Production

..............................................................................

_____Overview

Music Contest ]I[ is an international music competition. It is like a
demo-party music competition, but you do not have to go anywhere! Entries
are collected on the Internet site ftp.cdrom.com. When the contest is
over, a public group of judges will vote. The results will reflect how
each song has done in a number of categories: form, samples, technical,
 originality, and subjective.

There are two divisions to MC3: rookie and veteran. The rookie division is
for those who are just beginning to track music or do not want to compete
with the veterans of the scene. The veteran division is for those who have
been tracking for a while and want to compete with well known musicians.

One of the frustrating things in MC1 and MC2 was that songs were not
anonymous: a few judges said they would rate some songs poorly because they
did not like the authors. We are going to try and prevent this from
happening in MC3. ID numbers will be assigned to both entrants and judges.
This makes the contest more fair, but it adds complexity.

Please be sure to read this file over very carefully. We have done our
best to make this contest efficient and streamlined.

_____Entering a Song or Becoming a Judge

To enter a song, you have to fill out an application. You will be assigned
an ID number. This number will be used in the song title, the song file
name, and the archive name. When you upload your song to be judged, there
should be no way of knowing who the author is.

To become a judge, you have to fill out an application. You will be
assigned an ID number. The contest will end on June 20, 1995. When we
have collected all the entries, a judging list will be posted. This list
will contain judge ID numbers and the songs each judge must vote on.
Please note that you _must_ have a Gravis Ultrasound card to judge.

We will be keeping track of all people and their ID numbers. This will
allow us to prevent a judge from voting on his/her own song. Because of
this ID number system, you can enter a song _and_ be a judge.

Please refer to the "Voting" section in these rules for more information on
 being a Judge.

Please refer to "Competition Rules", "Reasons for Disqualification", etc.
for more information on being an entrant.

..............................................................................

_____Competition Rules

 1. Song must be MOD, MTM, S3M, or XM format
 2. Size of song must be 512k or less (524,288 bytes)
 3. The song must not be previously released anywhere
 4. No remixes or remakes of other songs (even your own)
 5. The song must be on ftp.cdrom.com before 00:00 GMT June 20, 1995

Before you enter your song, you must send in an application. After we
receive this, you will be sent your own unique 6-digit ID number. This
number will be used for several things:

 6. Within the song itself, the title _must_ be your ID number.
 7. The song must be formatted correctly:

Example: I have been assigned the ID number "123456"

If I enter the ROOKIE division, I would name my files like:
O-123456.MOD <-- name of the song
O-123456.ZIP <-- name of the archive

If I enter the VETERAN division, I would name my files like:
E-123456.MOD <-- name of the song
         E-123456.ZIP <-- name of archive

So use "O-" if rOokie, and "E-" if vEteran.
See the file E-123456 (included with this archive) for an example.

..............................................................................

_____Reasons for Disqualification

 1. Entering more than one song or version of a song.
 2. Submitting the song after 00:00 GMT June 20, 1995
 3. Including _any_ text in the song itself other than song title (ID number)
 4. Not using ZIP, ARJ, or LHA/LZH for the archive
 5. The song or archive is corrupt. Do not worry if your ftp upload got
messed up, we will do our best to help fix these. In the event your
upload is corrupt, please reupload with the extension ".good" For
example, "O-123456.ZIP" is corrupt. Reupload the archive as
     "O-123456.ZIP.good".
 6. Using prerecorded music. This would include extended-length samples.
Drum loops are permitted, but the song might be judged poorly.

A song may also be disqualified due to unforeseen circumstances.

If you are disqualified from MC3, you are not permitted to re-enter.

..............................................................................

_____Distribution Sites

There is only one official distribution site: HORNET (ftp.cdrom.com).
Entries will be collected under /pub/demos/incoming/mc3.

If do not have direct Internet access, convince your local sysop to upload
 your entry to HORNET.

..............................................................................

_____Voting

There are three divisions of judges:

 Level 1 : Observer

Judges in this division want to vote on MC3 tunes, but are not entering a
   tune themselves.

 Level 2 : Entrant

Judges in this division must be entering Music Contest 3.

 Level 3 : Core

A panel of experienced and respected scene musicians will be selected to
be in the core division. These individuals will know what to look for
when voting on a song, and should provide a professional balance to the
   judging.

All judges _must_ have a Gravis Ultrasound card with at least 512k memory.

After all the entries are collected, a judging list will be distributed.
The list will contain judge ID's and the songs each judge must vote on.
This list should be distributed on June 25, 1995.

Each level of judging will have a different strength. The "Core" judges
will have voting strength of 3, while "Entrant" and "Observer" will have
strengths of 2 and 1 respectively. This should make for a very fair voting
 system.

Core judges will be selected. Entrant and Observer judges must apply.
