Windows 95 All Laser Printers FAQ's Prints garbage before document or doesn't print in Postscript mode. If you are printing and a page of garbage precedes your document or if the printer reports "flushing buffer" in the status window, you may need to update the parallel port driver that you have installed (LPT.VXD). This is a bug in the Windows 95 LPT driver. An updated LPT driver is included on the WIndows 95 CD. The problem is documented by Microsoft in the support knowledge base as problem number Q132425. NOTE: This would only apply if the printer if attached parallel. To update your LPT.VXD: 1. Remove all Printer Objects from the printers folder. (To get to the Printers folder select Start, Settings, and then Printer) 2. Shell to a DOS Prompt through Start, Programs, and MS-DOS Prompt. 3. Type "CD System" and press Enter. Then type "Rename LPT.VXD LPT.OLD" and press Enter. Copy the LPT.VXD file to the C:\Windows\System subdirectory.* 4. Type "Exit" and then press Enter to return to Windows 95. 5. Then restart Windows 95. 6. Then reinstall the Printers in the Printers Folder. *(Note: The LPT.VXD file can be obtained from the Drivers\Printer\Lpt subdirectory on the Windows 95 CD-Rom, by contacting Microsoft or by downloading the LPT.EXE from either Microsoft's Internet address, ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles, or their Compuserve Forum, Go MSL.) ============== Postscript Limitcheck errors from Corel 5.0 Question: Why do I sometimes receive a limitcheck error printed out rather than my document? Or it will only print part/none of the document when printing postscript? Answer: In Corel 5.0 Click on FILE, PRINT, OPTIONS, OPTIONS, turn on AUTO INCREASE FLATNESS. This may especially occur when printing separations. ============== Windows 95 4039 4049 Printers MS WORD 7.0 locks up when printing with WIN 3.1 version of PS2 driver If you are using the WIN 3.1 version of the PS2 driver, WORD 7.0 will lock up when you print. You must disable background printing in WORD 7.0, and it should then print fine. The path to following when disabling background printing in WORD is: TOOLS, OPTIONS, PRINT, BACKGROUND PRINTING. Take the check out of the box for BACKGROUND PRINTING. If you want to leave BACKGROUND PRINTING enabled, install the OPTRA PS driver from the WIN 95 CD. The OPTRA PS driver can be found on the CD under \drivers\printer\lexmark, or you can download the file MPWN95AE.EXE from the BBS, COMPUSERVE, FTP sites. ============== Common Requested Files for OS2, NT, and 95 Summary of MarkVision for OS2 or NT Servers with Windows Clients: NPU_OS2.EXE NPU for OS2 (MV Server) NPU_NT.EXE NPU for NT (MV Server) 4AWN31DE.EXE Optra Plus "Windows Setup Diskette" (MV Client) 4AMO__DE.EXE Optra Plus "Driver Diskette" (MV Client) NPU_MVC.EXE MarkVision Everywhere (LexLink &TCP/IP NET.DLL's for NPU & MV Client) MVWN3X.EXE Contains all the .DLL and .HLP files for bi-di printers (MV Client) NPP MarkVision for OS2 Server and Client with OS2 Clients: MVOS3X1E.EXE MV for OS2 Disk 1 (MV Server and Client) MVOS3X2E.EXE MV for OS2 Disk 2 (MV Server and Client) MVOS3X3E.EXE MV for OS2 Disk 3 (MV Server and Client) APAR: PJ19433 FixPack from IBM (1-800-992-4777) (MV Server and Client) Optra Plus Disks: 4AWN31DE.EXE Optra Plus "Windows Setup Diskette" (MV Client) 4AMO__DE.EXE Optra Plus "Driver Diskette" (MV Client) 4AOS21DE.EXE Optra Plus "OS2 Setup Diskette" Optra C Disks: 45WN31DE.EXE Optra C "Windows Setup Diskette" (MV Client) 45MO__DE.EXE Optra C "Driver Diskette" (MV Client) 45OS21DE.EXE Optra C "OS2 Setup Diskette" MarkVision Client Disks: NPU_MVC.EXE MarkVision Everywhere (LexLink &TCP/IP NET.DLL's for NPU & MV Client) MVWN3X.EXE Contains all the .DLL and .HLP files for bi-di printers (MV Client) NPU MarkVision Server Disks (Windows Clients Only): NPU_OS2.EXE NPU for OS2 (MV Server) NPU_NT.EXE NPU for NT (MV Server) Printer Drivers: Windows NT 3.51 PCL5 MPWN3A5E.EXE Optra, Optra Plus 45WN3A5E.EXE Win NT 3.51Optra C Windows NT 3.5 PCL5 MPWN355E.EXE Optra, Optra Plus 45WN355E.EXE Optra C Windows NT 3.x PS MPNT3XAE.EXE All Lexmark/IBM PostScript Printers OS2 MPOS32AE.EXE All Lexmark/IBM PostScript Printers OS/2 2.1x & 3.0 32-Bit MPOS16AE.EXE All Lexmark/IBM PostScript Printers OS/2 1.3 and above 16-Bit Windows 95 MPW95AE.EXE 4039 Plus, 4079 Plus, Optra, Optra Plus, & Optra C PostScript 45WN955E.EXE Optra C PCL5 MPWN955E.EXE Win 95 Optra, Optra Plus PCL5 ============== Win 95 4029 Printer Legal page prints out as letter size If you are using the MS developed 4029 PS driver that ships with Win 95, and you try to print a legal size page all text below 11" from the top will be clipped off. Increase the memory setting in the driver PROPERTIES, DEVICE OPTIONS window. The default is 2 MB, change the setting to match the amount of RAM installed at the printer. If you actually have 2 MB at the printer increase the setting to 3 MB. There is an updated driver component on the Lexmark BBS that should take care of this conflict. Download MPWN95AE.EXE. ============== Windows 95 4019, 4029, and 4037 Printers Getting Memory Full errors that you didn't receive in WIN 3.1 If you are using the MS developed driver that shipped with WIN 95 it could be the cause of the problem. If you are printing a document/spreadsheet that printed with no problem from WIN 3.1 but now you receive memory full error messages, it may be due to the driver sending the entire page as a graphic. This may occur even if you have TT fonts as graphics disabled in the driver. This most often occurs in Excel. You can try decreasing the resolution selection in the driver or try installing the Win 3.1 driver. Contact Microsoft for assistance with the MS developed driver. If installing the WIN 3.1 driver is not an option then you can change the mode on the printer to PCL4 and install the HP II driver. If the HP II driver fails in the same manner, the page you are trying to print is probably too complex for the amount of memory that you have installed at the printer. ============== Characters being dropped The MS developed PPDS driver has a problem with some TT fonts. We have seen this occur with TT fonts supplied with a version of Corel. The symptom is that a particular character will consistently be omitted from the printed page. You can install the WIN 3.1 PPDS driver (Lexmark developed) and it should work. Microsoft has been contacted about this. ============== What Windows 95 driver to use with the Winwriter 400/600 You must install the original diskettes that came with the printer. (Go to START, RUN, type A:\SETUP, hit , then complete the Winwriter install). When you install the WinWriter diskettes, you will be prompted for the Windows 95 CD or diskettes. ============== Prompt for Manual feed in Wordperfect for Windows. Everytime I print from WordPerfect for Windows to my WinWriter 400/600 it prompts for manual feed, and I have to press the Resume Button in the Print Status Window or on the printer operator panel, why? The selected paper definition in WordPerfect may default to manual feed. To change this, click on LAYOUT from the WordPerfect Menu Bar, then select "Page", "Papersize", then highlight the "standard" or "letter" paper definition. Click on "Edit" and select the Paper Location as "Upper Tray" or "Tray 1", then click on "OK", then "Select". The above setup is for letter size paper from Tray 1. ============== Windows All Laser Printers Using the envelope feeder in Word for Windows. You must tell Word that the printer's envelope feeder is installed. Instruction for Word 2.x: From Word's Menu Bar select Tools, Options... Then under category select PRINT. Then place a "X" in the box next to "Printer's envelope feeder installed", click on "OK". Instructions for WORD 6.0 & WORD 7.0: From Word's Menu Bar select Tools, Envelopes & Labels... Then click on the Envelopes tab. Click on the Envelope Options, then Click on Printing Options. The Feed Method should be set to the fourth selection from the left. Now you must select the FEED FROM Location as Envelope instead of Manual. ============== 4039 and 4049 Printers Tray selection not working with Amipro 3.0, 3.01, and 3.1 Problem Description: If using AmiPro 3.0, 3.01, or 3.1, and an earlier version of the Optra PCL 5e Driver (95/03/07), you will experience problems when trying to do different tray selections. If you have the printer in GL/2 or AutoSelect, the first page of the print job will pull from the printer's default tray (which is set on the operator panel). Raster and Print Accelerator selections work fine. Final Resolution: This problem is fixed with release 95.03.31 or later versions of the PCL driver. ============== Printing multiple copies from Word Can not print multiple copies from Windows applications using our PCL5E Windows driver to the Optra, 4039 + or 10+ printer in Auto Select or GL/2 graphics mode. A possible solution is to change the graphics mode to Raster or Print Accelerator in the driver settings and this will allow you to print multiple copies fine. Final Resolution: Word was reporting the page layout at a time in the datastream that our driver would miss. A fix has been implemented to catch the settings correctly. This fix was implemented in late February of 95. ============== Wordperfect 6.0 using PCL Driver will not display fonts correctly If you have the Optra PCL5E driver in the AutoSelect mode and running Wordperfect 6.0 for Windows, some screen fonts display incorrectly. The characters overlap on the screen but print correctly. The only two fonts that seem to do this are Arial and Times New Roman (the most common). If you place the printer in the Raster mode and also turn off Screen Font Substitution under the driver setup the fonts will display and print correctly. Another way to correct this problem is to remark out the font substitution lines in the LMPCL5B.INI file that pertain to the Arial and Times New Roman Fonts. Final Resolution: This problem with GL/2 was fixed with the driver version 3.7.95. ============== WinWriter Printers Prompt for Manual feed in Wordperfect for Windows. ============== 4029 and 4019 Printers Windows Can't print reverse text. I can't print white text on black background from Windows applications when printing to my 4019/4029/4037 printer, why? It displays correctly on my screen, but will only print black on white. To make this work with IBM PPDS drivers in Windows you must select True Type fonts as the text, and you must turn on "True Type fonts as graphics" in the printer driver setup. For the 4037 you also need to make the following changes in the 4037 Driver Setup window: Use Printer Patterns = off Optimize for Performance = off Disable Device fonts = on To get to the printer driver setup open the MAIN group under PROGRAM MANAGER, then open CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS. Then highlight your 4019/4029/4037 driver, then click on SETUP. ============== 4019 Printer Check code 4 when printing second copy in Windows. Why do I get an error code 4 displayed in the status window on my IBM 4019 Laserprinter when printing from Windows applications? Version 3.08 of the PPDS driver has a bug with downloading TrueType fonts (this is the version that is contained on the Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11 install diskettes). To check the version of the driver, open the MAIN group, CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS, then click on Setup of the IBM Laserprinter driver. On the Title Bar you will see the title IBM Laserprinter on LPTX, after the title you will see a "v". Following the "v" you will see the version of the PPDS driver. If the version is 3.08, you need to update the driver. The most recent version as of 9/15/95 is 4.45. You can however, turn on TRUE TYPE FONTS AS GRAPHICS in the driver setup, to allow the use of the 3.08 driver until you can update. Another cause of the problem could be that you are selecting optional cartridges or fonts as being installed when they are really not available. To check this, scroll up and down the "Optional Cartridges or Fonts" list in the 4019 driver setup window. If you have any selection in that list highlighted and you do not have the card installed at the printer, remove the selection of that card from the list by clicking on that entry once. After you have removed all selections from that list Click on "OK", if you click on Cancel your changes will be lost. You may then Close the PRINTERS window, it may be necessary to exit windows and restart for your changes to take effect. ======================= LASER PRINTER FILENAMES OF PRINT DRIVERS FOR WIN 3.1 AND WIN 95 4019 19WN3XPE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PPDS MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs 4029 29WN3XPE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PPDS MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs 4037 37WN31PE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PPDS 4047 47WN315E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PCL5 4039 39WN315E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PCL5 MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs 4039 + MPWN315E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PCL5E MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPLXPS2E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPWN955E.EXE WINDOWS 95 PCL5E MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs OPTRA MPWN315E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PCL5E MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPLXPS2E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPWN955E.EXE WINDOWS 95 PCL5E MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs OPTRA + MPWN315E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 PCL5E MPWN31AE.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 1 MPLXPS2E.EXE WINDOWS 3.1 POSTSCRIPT LEVEL 2 MPWN95AE.EXE WINDOWS 95 POSTSCRIPT MPWN955E.EXE WINDOWS 95 PCL5E MPALD_AE.EXE PAGEMAKER 5.0 PPDs WINWRITER 400/600 These drivers are not published on the BBS, CompuServe, or our FTP site, due to a license agreement with Microsoft. Frequently Asked Questions on the WinWriter 200 Q: How do I print from DOS (with Windows installed) ? A: To print from a DOS application, Windows must be running. DOS must be accessed by clicking on the DOS icon in Windows. Choose an HP II or an equivalent PCL4 driver in your DOS applications. Select the Winwriter 200 driver as the default printer in the Windows Control Panel. Changes to fonts, page sizes, orientation are made in Windows by clicking on the Winwriter 200 MS-DOS Settings icon. Q: How do I print from DOS (with Windows not installed) ? A: The Winwriter 200 requires that Windows has been invoked. The PCL4 emulation is host based and runs under Windows. Windows also controls the bi-directional communications between the printer and host. If Windows is not running then you cannot use the Winwriter 200. Q: How do I set up the Winwriter 200 in Windows ? A: Connect all other printers to FILE that are connected to the same parallel port as the WW200 in the Windows Control Panel (usually LPT1). The Windows Printing System disks are included with the printer. This software must be installed for the printer to be functional. To install the Windows Printing System click on FILE at the Program Manager and then click RUN. Type A:SETUP in the dialogue box and press Return. Verify that the printer is turned on and the printer cable is plugged in before sending a print job. Failure to do so could cause the application to lock while trying to establish communications with the printer. Q: Prints slowly from DOS applications. A: Interpretation of PCL4 to WPS requires invoking a PCL4 emulator on the host. This data conversion and the time to print is affected by: complexity of the print job, processor, availability of host resources, and if the printer is in power saver mode. This is a limitation on lesser PC's. Things that will speed up DOS print performance: use a faster processor, use Windows applications, use DOS applications in a DOS box as opposed to a DOS full screen, lower the Auto Form Feed Enable Time if the application does not generate End of Page commands, or use a printer that can interpret PCL data. i.e. Winwriter 400, Valuewriter 300, 600 Q: How do you print to multiple printers with the Winwriter installed ? A: Connect all other printers to FILE before printing to the Winwriter 200. Connect the Winwriter 200 to FILE before sending a print job to another printer. The Windows Printing System loads a Virtual Printer Device Driver or VPD and other files to allow nibble mode bidirectional parallel communications. You disable the VPD by setting the Winwriter 200 to FILE. Q: Will this printer work with other operating systems or as network printer? A: No, this printer is designed to work only with Windows 3.1 or greater with DOS being the operating system. This printer will NOT work with OS/2, UNIX, Windows NT, Windows 3.0. The Winwriter cannot be used as a network printer. Network spoolers and print queues would interrupt the communications between printer and host. The Winwriter was designed for the small business and home user.
