Frequently Asked Questions for Laser Printers Using Windows Applications -1- Q: When I print from WordPerfect for Windows to my Winwriter 400 / 600, it prompts for manual paper each time and must press the Resume button in the Print Status Window or on the printer operator panel. How do I correct this? A: The selected paper definition in WordPerfect may be defaulting to manual feed. To change this, click on Layout - Page - Paper Size, then highlight the standard or letter paper definition. Click on Edit and select the Paper Location as Upper Tray or Tray 1 then click on OK, then Select. The above setup is for letter size paper from Tray 1. -2- Q: When I try to print White text on a Black background using either the 4019 / 4029 / 4037 driver, all I get out is the black background. -OR- I can't print white text on black background from Windows applications when printing to my 4019/4029/4037 printer, why? It displays correctly on my screen, but will only print black on white. A: To make this work with IBM drivers in Windows, you must select True Type Fonts as the text, and you must select True Type fonts as Graphics in the printer driver setup under Control Panel - Printers. For the 4037 you also need to make the following changes in the 4037 Driver Setup window. Use Printer Pattern = OFF Optimize for Performance = OFF Disable Device fonts = ON -3- Q: When I attempt to print from different trays with AmiPro 3.x and my 4039 / Optra, the first page is pulling from the incorrect paper source. A: If using an earlier version of the Optra PCL 5e driver (up to and including 95.03.07), you will experience problems when trying to do different tray selections from AmiPro. If you have the printer in GL/2 or AutoSelect, the first page of the print job will pull from the printer default tray (which is set on the operator panel). Raster and Print Accelerator selections work fine. This problem was fixed with release 95.03.31 or later versions of the PCL driver. -4- Q: Why do I get an error code 4 displayed in the status window on my IBM 4019 Laserprinter when printing from Windows applications? A: Version 3.08 of the PPDS driver has a problem with downloading TrueType fonts (this is the version that is contained on the Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11 install diskettes). To check the version of the driver, open the MAIN group, CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS, then click on Setup of the IBM Laserprinter driver. On the Title Bar you will see the title IBM Laserprinter on LPTx, after the title you will see vXXXX. The numbers following the v indicate the version of the driver. If the version is 3.08, you should update the driver. The most recent version as of 4/1/96 is 4.46. You can however, turn on TRUE TYPE FONTS AS GRAPHICS in the driver setup, as a temporary workaround to this problem. Another cause of the problem may be that you are selecting optional cartridges or fonts as being installed when they are really not available. To check this, scroll through the Optional Cartridges or Fonts in the driver setup window. If you have any selection in that list highlighted and the corresponding font card is not installed in the printer, remove the selection of that card from the list by clicking on that entry once. After you have removed all selections from that list Click on OK , if you click on Cancel your changes will be lost. You may then Close the PRINTERS window; it may be necessary to exit windows and restart for your changes to take effect. -5- Q: When I print from WordPerfect for Windows (all versions) to my 4029 the text comes out too large and formatted incorrectly on the page, why? A: This may be a problem relating to the setup of the software. If you are using the Windows PPDS driver version 4.2 or higher the problem may be that you are attempting to print at 600 dpi but your printer does not meet the necessary requirements to accomplish this. To check if your printer is capable of printing 600 dpi, print a Menu Settings page by pressing the MAIN MENU button for Menu Settings, pressing LIST + for Print Settings, then pressing SELECT. The printed page will show the printer code level as two numbers and a letter following the part number (P/N xxxxxxx ) in the upper right corner. If the code is lower than 60D, the highest resolution supported by the printer will be 300 dpi; if the code is 60D or higher, the printer also requires at least 3Meg of total printer memory which can be checked in the lower left corner next to Installed Memory. To fix this problem if the printer is not capable of printing at 600 dpi, you will need to change the text and / or graphics quality of your WordPerfect print jobs to a setting other than HIGH, since this setting will attempt to print the job at the highest possible resolution for the printer (in this case 600 dpi). To change the default graphics quality setting, choose File - Preferences - Print and set Graphics/Print Quality to Medium. -6- Q: When I print envelopes from Microsoft Word, the printer will prompt me to load the envelope manually, even though I have the envelope feeder. Why? A: You must tell Word that the printer's envelope feeder is installed. Instruction for WORD 2.x: From Word's Menu select Tools - Options - Print and place an "X" in the box next to "Printer's Envelope Feeder Has Been Installed", click on "OK". Instructions for WORD 6.0 From Word's Menu select Tools - Envelopes & Labels. Next click on the Envelopes tab and choose Envelope Options - Printing Options. The Feed Method should be set to the fourth selection from the left and the FEED FROM option should be set to Envelope instead of Manual. -7- Q: How can I remove the Winwriter 400 / 600 printer from my Windows? A: To reinstall the Windows Printing System, it will first be necessary to remove it following the above procedure, as the WPS software will not overwrite any files which currently exist on the system. After removing the WPS software, restart Windows and reinstall from the original disks by choosing File - Run - A:SETUP.EXE. -9- Q: How can I totally remove Markvision and the Printer Toolkit from my Windows 3.1 system? Markvision and the DOS Printer Toolkit have now been totally removed from Windows. -10- Q: Adobe Type Manager is not correctly working with my 4039 Plus / Optra in Postscript mode. A: ATM is not recognizing the LEXPS driver as a valid Postscript device. Depending on your version of Adobe Type Manager, you will have to make certain adjustments to its operation. ATM 2.6 and Earlier Under the Control Panel and Printers, load up the Postscript Printer selection which is included with Windows. Attach it to the same port as the Lexmark PS2 driver. Once this is done, reinstall the fonts through the ATM and restart Windows. This Postscript level 1 driver will not actually be used and is in fact simply a placeholder. If this fix is not acceptable, you should update your version of Adobe Type Manager. ATM 3.0 and Later (Recommended Version) Add this to the ATM.INI which is located in the Windows subdirectory. [PSDriverNames] lexps=Yes This is case sensitive, so type it in exactly as it appears above. After you make this change, restart Windows and reinstall your Type 1 fonts back through the ATM Control Panel, making sure the check box under the ADD FONT dialog box for "Autodownload for Postscript Printer" is checked. You will be prompted to restart Windows. After restarting you should be able to print Type 1 fonts just as they are displayed on the screen. -11- Q: How can I get drivers for my printer? A: Drivers for Lexmark printers are available on Compuserve (GO LEXMARK), on Lexmark's BBS (606-232-5238), the Worldwide Web (WWW.LEXMARK.COM), Internet FTP (FTP.LEXMARK.COM) and also from Lexmark directly by calling the Technical Support Center at 606-232-3000.
