Madge Networks Token Ring Support for PCI PowerMac Computers Copyright (c) Madge Networks Ltd January 1996 This document describes how to install and troubleshoot Madge Networks Smart 16/4 PCI (bm) Rev2 Token Ring adapters in a PCI PowerMac. Prerequisits: 1. A PCI PowerMac running system 7.5 or later and OpenTransport version 1.1.1 or later. 2. A Madge Smart 16/4 PCI (bm) Rev2 Ringnode. Installing the adapter: 1. With your PowerMac switched off and disconnected from the electricity supply insert your Madge Ringnode into a PCI bus slot. Ensure that the Madge Ringnode is properly seated in the slot. 2. Connect an STP or UTP (but not both) cable to your Madge Ringnode. 3. Switch on your PowerMac. Installing the driver: On the diskette that contains this ReadMe! file there is an application called "Madge Driver Installer". Execute this application and follow the instructions. Installing the driver manually: 1. On the diskette that contains this ReadMe! file there are two driver files called: Madge PCI (bm) Rev2 (16) Madge PCI (bm) Rev2 (4) You should copy the appropriate driver for your Madge Ringnode into the Extensions folder found inside the System Folder folder. Determine the correct driver to use with the following rule: If your token ring network operates at 4 MBit/s then use one of the drivers whose name includes the term "(4)". If your token ring network operated at 16 MBit/s then use of the drivers whose name includes the term "(16)". If you are unsure of the speed at which your token ring network operates check with your network administrator. Warning: using an adapter at the wrong speed can cause serious problems on a token ring network. Examples: (i) If your token ring network operates at 16 MBit/s. Use the "Madge PCI (bm) Rev2 (16)" driver. (ii) You have 4 MBit/s. Use the "Madge PCI (bm) Rev2 (4)" driver. 2. Restart your PowerMac. 3. If you select the "AppleTalk" control panel you should now see that "Token Ring" appears as one of the network choices. Troubleshooting: Problem: "Token Ring" does not appear as a network choice for "AppleTalk". Causes: (a) The Madge Ringnode is not properly seated in the PCI bus slot. (b) You have not selected the correct driver - see above. Problem: You cannot connect to a remote computer. Causes: (a) The STP or UTP token ring lobe cable is not properly connected to the Madge Ringnode. (b) You are running your Madge Ringnode at the wrong speed. Ensure that you are using the correct driver - see above.
