I installed "Warp-II" on my home computer recently and immediately noticed differences in the product since "Warp-I." The most significant changes have been in the installation procedure and the look and feel of the desktop. IBM has made the installation of OS/2 much simpler. In fact, there are now two implementation choices: Easy and Advanced. The "easy" method is intended for the average computer user and automatically reads your computer's configuration, thereby figuring out what needs to be installed, and what doesn't. This is ideal for mass marketing OS/2 to the general public. The "advanced" method is fairly similar to the old approach to installation and is more suitable for experienced OS/2 users. "Advanced" installation allows the user to control the settings and installation process. After re-booting from installation, the first thing you notice is the visual appearance of the desktop, which is now "crisper" in appearance and behavior, making it even more enjoyable to use. Even, the "tutorial" section under the "Information" icon/folder has greater visual impact. There are also many other smaller items which I'm still in the process of learning and trying: * "Launch Manager" to help you manage the desktop. * New tools for tracking and managing computer resources. * A new approach for saving your desktop settings. Also included is a "bonus pack" providing users with such things as: Compuserv access, IBM'S Person-to-Person communications package, and FaxWorks for faxing messages. Although the official release date of the new OS/2 is still under wraps, reliable sources tell me that it will be the first week of October. Also, look for a highly competitive pricing structure (I'm hearing of a $25 upgrade fee). With this new version of OS/2, along with their new SMP version and other developments, look for an all-out marketing offensive by IBM in the last quarter of this year. IBM will implement major advertising campaigns, along with many promotional items.
