DATABASE 2 OS/2 v1 (DB2/2) 11/23/93 and DISTRIBUTED DATABASE CONNECTION SERVICES/2 v2 (DDCS/2) DB2/2 Version 1 is the latest member of of IBM's relational family of database products, joining DB2 for MVS, SQL/DS for VM and VSE, and SQL/400 for OS/400. DB2/6000 for AIX will be generally available on November 12, 1993. As a Server, DB2/2 v1 can support access from numerous clients thru a variety of protocols. Client support is currently available from DOS, DOS with Windows, OS/2, and AIX workstations. Numerous IBM and OEM vendor tools are available to support end-user applications, application development, and database administration. Examples are Compuware's RemoteControl/2 (administration), Bridge Technology's Bridge/Fastload (very fast data loading), Micro Focus COBOL Workbench (application development), and IBM's own LAN Distance (remote connectivity to LANs). Our new "DB2 Client/Server Solutions Directory" (available here on Compuserve) details many of these solutions and more. DB2/2 v1 is a 32-bit product which builds upon the functions previously provided in the OS/2 Extended Services Version 1.0 Database Manager products. DB2/2 v1 includes many additional new features focusing on application portability, DB2 compatibility, SQL and industry standards compliance, connectivity, reliability, availability, systems management, quality, and performance. DDCS/2 v2 has also been improved and is now a 32-bit product. DDCS/2 v2 provides a "gateway" function for access to host relational databases. This access is provided transparently to applications so that standard SQL can be issued to connect to, access, and update a host database as easily as if it were a local OS/2 database. All of the DB2/2 v1 clients are supported in this environment. Clients can compile, link, and bind applications with no changes in APIs, compilers, or methodology. Existing applications or OEM vendor products can easily work with DDCS/2 v2 without changes providing they were written using standard SAA SQL. DB2/2 v1 and DDCS/2 are available in single-user and multi-user "gateway" versions. DB2/2 Client/Server, the multi-user version, includes Distributed Client Feature support for OS/2, DOS, and DOS Windows clients and a Query Manager Distributed Feature for OS/2 clients. DB2/2 supports existing 16-bit database applications without recompiling or relinking. Extended Services v1 and Extended Edition v1.3 databases can be easily and quickly migrated for use with DB2/2 v1. Additionally, DB2/2 clients can also access down-level ES v1 database servers. DB2/2 has improved its FFST/2 support to provide better problem determination and problem source identification information to users. DB2/2 servers, gateways, and clients can be managed by the IBM LAN NetView Agents Extended product which will include an agent for DB2/2. DB2/2 and DDCS/2 V2 are enabled to be installed remotely using IBM's Configuration, Installation, and Distributed (CID) technology, allowing these products to be installed remotely from a code server. DB2/2 and DDCS/2 runs on OS/2 2.0 with ServicePAK Level XR06055 or higher and with OS/2 2.1. DB2/2 supports the NTS/2, Extended Services Communications Manager, and Communications Manager/2 products.
