Notes on Installing DLR for DOS 6.22 The following information, was received from IBM after trying unsucessfully to install the DLR portion of LAN SERVER 3.0 on a DOS machine using MSDOS 6.22. PROBLEM After entering the Workstation ID and then the Domain name during installation, the program would copy a few files and enter an error screen: CE10258 - a READ ONLY error was detected on a file when installing the program. HISTORY The computer was an NEC Versa Ultralite with 8MB RAM, 180MB HD using doublespace. Initial feeling was doublespace was the problem. So I made the uncompressed drive larger AND made that drive D: instead of H:. When Double Space is installed, it looks for the highest installed drive, adds four to it and makes the next drive the uncompressed drive. Obviously, DLR would not install (it only allows up to drive F:). In order to change from H to D, you have to edit the doublespace.ini file which is R/O. That didn't work - so I REMOVED doublespace. This takes an incredible amount of time. I think it would have been quicker to backup the drive (CMS TRAKKER), reformat the hard drive and restore! It often enters a defrag program during uncompression and swaps back and forth between C: and D:. Of course it depends on how full the drive is, as well as how large each drive is. That didn't work - so I called IBM. They gave me four SIMPLE items to type in, and poof!! It worked: SETVER CIP_MAIN.EXE 5.00 SETVER REDIR40.EXE 5.00 SETVER NET.COM 5.00 and REM SHARE.EXE in the autoexec.bat (if present) I later HAD to uncomment the SHARE.EXE because WINWORD would not run - it seems to have no effect. SETVER.EXE must remain in the autoexec.bat. WHY DLR only knows about MSDOS 5.00, because it was the only one around when the software was written, hence the 5.00 forces. So far no other problems have crept up - so I offer this as some input... Ray Kester - 8/12/94
