OS2REQ - REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OS/2 2.X 02/02/96 ======================================================================= Requirements and Recommendations for OS/2 2.x ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document contains considerations and recommendations regarding the installation of OS/2 2.x. RESOLUTION The README.INS file on Diskette 3 provides additional information. README.INS can be viewed and printed from an editor in DOS, OS/2, or another operating system. Please review the files before installation. System Requirements ------------------- For the OS/2 operating system, your system needs: * An 80386 SX, or later, 32-bit microprocessor * 4 MB of random access memory (RAM) minimum * 6 MB of RAM (recommended) when installing Multimedia * 40 MB (recommended) of hard-disk space for the entire operating system * An additional 5 MB of hard-disk space for Multimedia See the OS/2 documentation for additional information. Redirecting Drives ------------------ If drive A is a 5.25-inch drive and drive B is a 3.5-inch drive, and the installation diskettes are 3.5-inch, you can obtain a utility program from the IBM PCC BBS (919-517-0001) or CompuServe that lets you do the installation from drive B. The utility is called: * INST21L (for diskettes with blue labels) * INST21M (for diskettes with salmon labels) CD-ROM Installation ------------------- If you are installing the operating system from CD, see the OS/2 documentation for additional information. If the CD or adapter is NOT listed, you might need to obtain device drivers that are specific for OS/2. Call the vendor for any drivers you need and follow the instructions in the Installation Guide (page xviii) for adding the drivers to Diskette 1 and the CONFIG.SYS file. Also see page xviii of the Installation Guide if you HAVE the device drivers for the CD and adapter. If you need more space on Diskette 1: 1. Do a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1. 2. Insert the COPY of Diskette 1in drive A. 3. For non-Micro-Channel systems, type IBM2.* and press Enter. For Micro Channel systems, type IBM1.* and press Enter. For most non-IBM systems, you should disable the following: * Turbo * Cache * Shadow RAM Note: You do not need to disable these on Packard Bell systems. These features usually are found in the BIOS. If you have any questions regarding these features, contact the vendor. After installation, these features can be ENABLED. When installing OS/2, set video to: * VGA mode * 8-bit slot or mode, if possible * 640x480 resolution * Autosensing disabled, if the adapter has the capability If you are having difficulty with the installation and have additional devices such as a tape backup, a network card, or a scanner, disconnect the devices during installation. Also make sure the BIOS is a recent version. The recommended dates are: * AMI BIOS, 5/91 * Phoenix or Award BIOS, 5/92 Contact the vendor if you need an upgrade. When installation is complete, enable and reconnect the devices and features that were disabled and disconnected during installation. Review the video-adapter information in the OS/2 documentation to see if the resolution can be set higher. If you have video problems, call the vendor and make sure you have the latest driver. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
