OSCINHDS - ERROR DURING OS/2 WARP INSTALLATION: UNABLE TO OPERATE HARD DISK OR DISKETTE DRIVE 02/09/96 ======================================================================= Error during OS/2 Warp Installation: Unable to Operate Hard Disk or Diskette Drive ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION During installation of OS/2 Warp, the following error message is received: OS/2 is unable to operate the hard disk or diskette drive. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. * There could be an incompatibility between OS/2 and the system diskette-drive or hard-disk-drive controller: 1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the diskette or hard disk from where you are starting OS/2. 2. Find the statements with BASEDEV=filename.ADD and change them to: REM BASEDEV=filename.ADD 3. Be sure the following statements are in the file (x is 1 for non-Micro-Channel systems, and 2 for Micro Channel systems): BASEDEV=IBMxFLPY.ADD BASEDEV=IBMINT13.I13 BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD Note: OS2DASD.DMD is needed for IDE and SCSI hard disks. OS2SCSI.DMD is needed for SCSI hard disks only. * A diskette-drive or hard-disk-drive controller might have an additional device, such as a tape backup, scanner, network card, or modem, attached to it: Disconnect the additional devices, if possible. * An interrupt request (IRQ) level conflict might exist between the diskette-drive or hard-disk-drive controller and other installed devices: Change IRQ levels to eliminate conflicts. * The hard-disk partition where you are installing OS/2 is compressed with a DOS data-compression program: Use the data-compression program to uncompress the partition; then restart the installation procedure. * Traps usually are symptoms of software-related problems. When you have reviewed software symptoms, consider a hardware cause relating to caches and memory such as: - If the computer has an 80486 microprocessor, it might require faster RAM chips (60 ns or 70 ns). - There might be a problem with the external (level-2) CPU memory cache or main memory system on ISA or EISA systems. From setup or diagnostics diskettes, or from the built-in BIOS Setup program, try disabling all shadow RAM and external (level-2) CPU memory cache. If problems persist during the installation of OS/2 after trying this step, turn off the turbo switch, if available, disable caching during installation, and try again. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
