OSCINREQ - REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OS/2 WARP 01/26/96 ======================================================================= Requirements and Recommendations for OS/2 Warp ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION OS/2 Warp 3.0 can be installed over the following products: * OS/2 for Windows * DOS Version 3.30 or later * OS/2 Version 1.3 * Microsoft Windows 3.0, 3.1, or 3.11 * Windows for WorkGroups 3.1 or 3.11 Note: OS/2 does not enable the LAN connectivity function of Windows for WorkGroups. For information on how to use the network functions after installing OS/2, refer to "Application Considerations" in the online help. RESOLUTION The README.INS file on the Installation Diskette provides additional information. It can be viewed and printed from an editor in DOS, OS/2, or another operating system. Please review the files before installation. To view or print README.INS: 1. Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A. 2. Turn on the computer, or press Ctrl+Alt+Del if it is already on. 3. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert Diskette 1; then press Enter. 4. When the Welcome screen appears, press F3 to go to a command prompt. 5. Remove Diskette 1 and reinsert the Installation Diskette. 6. To view README.INS, type TEDIT README.INS and press Enter. Press F4 to quit the editor. To print a copy of README.INS, type COPY README.INS > LPT1 and press Enter (LPT1 represents the port to which your printer is connected. If using another port, type the correct one.) System Requirements ------------------- Review "Preparing your System" and "Choosing Easy or Advanced Installation" in the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp. You need: * An 80386 SX, or higher, 32-bit microprocessor. * 4 MB of RAM (random access memory) minimum. * 35 MB to 50 MB of free space is recommended for the base OS/2. * Multimedia requires an additional 10 MB of hard disk space. * A 1.44 MB diskette drive. * VGA video support. * An IBM compatible mouse. * OS/2 with BonusPak installation might require 85 MB to 95 MB, depending on options selected. This does NOT include the Swapper file. Note: The Swapper file is larger in OS/2 Warp than in previous releases of OS/2. In previous versions of OS/2, DLL code was never copied to the Swapper file. In OS/2 Warp, code for system DLLs can be written to the Swapper file. During system startup, PMMERGE, DOSCALL1, PMGPI, PMWP, and PMVIOP are swapped out. This means an overall increase in Swapper size and an increase in overall system performance. The most significant change is how system DLLs are loaded and what is now valid data for swapping. System DLLs include: DISPLAY SOM PMMERGE PMWP DOSCALL1 PMATM PMMLE IBMDEV32 PMCTLS PMSPL IBMVGA32 PMGPI PMVIOP Redirecting Your Drives ----------------------- The following procedures are for a system with 5.25-inch, 1.2 MB drive A, and a 3.5-inch, 1.44 MB drive B. You need two 5.25-inch diskettes for this procedure. Label one OS/2 Warp 525 DISK 0 and the other OS/2 Warp 525 DISK 1. 1. Start the system from DOS. 2. Insert 525 DISK 1 into drive A. At the command prompt, type FORMAT A: /U and press Enter. 3. When prompted for the volume label, type DISK 1 and press Enter. 4. At the C:\> prompt, type the following, pressing Enter after each: MD BINST CD BINST MD DISK0 MD DISK1 CD DISK1 5. Insert the 3.5-inch OS/2 Warp Diskette 1 in drive B. Type the following, pressing Enter after each: COPY B:\*.* DEL BUNDLE COPY *.* A:\ ECHO SET OS2_SHELL=B:\SYSINST2.EXE >> A:\CONFIG.SYS ECHO SET DISKETTESOURCE=B:\ >> A:\CONFIG.SYS 6. Insert the 3.5-inch OS/2 Warp Installation Diskette in drive B, and the 525 DISK 0 in drive A; then type FORMAT A: /U and press Enter. 7. When prompted for the volume label, type DISK 0 and press Enter. 8. Type the following, pressing Enter after each: CD.. CD DISK0 COPY B:\*.* DEL BUNDLE 9. Type DEBUG and press Enter. 10. At the command prompt, type the following, pressing Enter after each: L DS:0 1 0 1 E 13 60 E 14 09 E 15 F9 E 16 07 E 18 0F W DS:0 0 0 1 Q COPY *.* A:\ 11. Remove the OS/2 Warp Installation Diskette from drive B; then press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system and begin the installation. 12. When prompted to insert Diskette 1, insert OS/2 Warp 525 DISK 1 and follow the instructions on the screen. CD-ROM Installation ------------------- If you are using a CD-ROM for installation, review the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp. If the CD-ROM or an adapter is not listed, you might need to obtain device drivers specific for OS/2. Call the vendor for the device driver needed. If you need to add the device drivers to Diskette 1 and the CONFIG.SYS file, refer to the OS/2 documentation. If you need more space on Diskette 1, do a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1. Delete the following files from the COPY of the diskette: * For non-Micro-Channel systems, IBM2.* files * For Micro Channel systems, IBM1.* files. For most OEM products, it is recommended that you disable the Turbo, Cache, and Shadow RAM features. These features usually are found in BIOS. If you have any questions regarding these features, contact the vendor. After installation, these features can be ENABLED. Note: It is not necessary to disable these features in Packard Bell systems. When installing OS/2, set Video to: * VGA mode * 8-bit slot or mode, if possible * 640x480 resolution * Autosensing disabled, if the adapter has that capability If you are having difficulty with the installation and have additional devices such as a tape backup, network card, or scanner, it is recommended that you disconnect them during installation. The recommended dates for BIOS are: * AMI BIOS: 5/91 * Phoenix or Award BIOS: 5/92 If you need an upgrade, contact the vendor. When installation is complete, enable and reconnect the devices and features disconnected during installation. Review your adapter's information and OS/2 documentation to see if your video has the capability of higher resolution. If you have problems with the video, it is recommended that you FIRST contact the vendor and make sure you have the latest driver for OS/2.
