OSDA1200 - SYS1200 OR SYS0008 ERROR WHEN STARTING DOS SESSIONS UNDER OS/2 WARP 03/04/96 ======================================================================= SYS1200 or SYS0008 Error when Starting DOS Sessions under OS/2 Warp ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION When starting the system, the following error message appears: SYS1200: The system cannot create the DOS environment. The error code is ***. When starting a DOS or WIN-OS/2 session, the "Cannot start..." message is received. In addition, when running COMMAND.COM from an OS2 Window, the following error message is received: SYS0008: There is not enough memory available to process this command. All available memory is in use. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. You must selectively reinstall DOS support. Before starting, however, delete all files in the \OS2\MDOS subdirectory, unless WIN-OS/2 support is installed; in this case, back up the VWIN.SYS and VW32S.SYS files in the \OS2\MDOS subdirectory before deleting the files. When Selective Install is complete, copy the VWIN.SYS and VW32S.SYS files back to the \OS2\MDOS directory. You also need to add the WINDOWS directory to the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 1. Open OS/2 System; then open Command Prompts. 2. Select OS/2 Window; then type the following, pressing Enter after each: CD \OS2\MDOS COPY VW*.SYS \OS2 DEL *.* 3. When you see "Are you sure?," press Y. 4. Type Exit and press Enter. This will end the OS/2 Window session. 5. Open the OS/2 System folder. 6. Open the System Setup folder; then select Selective Install. 7. Select OK in the System Configuration window to get to the next screen. 8. If the Multimedia Device Settings window is displayed, select OK. 9. In the OS/2 Setup and Installation window select OS/2 DOS support. 10. Select Install. 11. Select the correct source drive, and then select Install. 12. Insert the OS/2 diskettes when prompted. 13. Do NOT perform shutdown when prompted. Instead, open the OS/2 Window and type the following, pressing Enter after each: CD \OS2 COPY VW*.SYS/MDOS CD \ E AUTOEXEC.BAT The AUTOEXEC.BAT file is displayed. At the end of the file is the PATH statement. 14. Add the WINDOWS directory, as follows: PATH C:\OS2;C:\OS2\MDOS;C:\;C:\WINDOWS; 15. Save and exit the file. 16. Shut down and then restart the system. This should solve the problem 99% of the time, if OS/2 Warp was not installed over a previous version of OS/2. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
