OSDAENCY - CONFIGURING MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIAS TO RUN UNDER OS/2 2.1 01/08/96 ======================================================================= Configuring Multimedia Encyclopedias to Run Under OS/2 2.1 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedure ------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes configuring Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia Version 5.0 and Software Toolworks Multimedia Encyclopedia Version 5.01 to run correctly under OS/2 2.1. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia Version 5.0 and Software Toolworks Multimedia Encyclopedia Version 5.01 are the same, except for different batch-file names (STW.BAT versus NGME.BAT) and path specifications (?:\STW versus ?:\NGME). Adapt the setup instructions for Software Toolworks Multimedia Encyclopedia to set up Grolier's Multimedia Encyclopedia. Refer to the OS/2 documentation for additional information and for detailed instructions for the following procedures. 1. Open a DOS Full Screen session and install the software. Note where the files are installed, because the program might change the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. If you indicate that sound will be used, the DEVICE=?:\STW\SNDBK12.SYS statement is added to the CONFIG.SYS file. You need to edit the CONFIG.SYS file and remark-out (REM) this statement. It will be added in a different place later. 2. Create a new program-object icon for running the program. 3. Change DOS Session settings for the program. If a sound board is used, set: AUDIO_ADAPTER_SHARING = REQUIRED This setting is not seen if MMPM/2 for OS/2 is not installed in the system. Note: If using a Pro AudioSpectrum sound board, add the following statement in the DOS_DEVICE session setting before the SNDBK12.SYS device driver: DOS_DEVICE = ?:\PROAUDIO\MVSOUND.SYS D:DMA Q:IRQ where ? is the partition where Pro AudioSpectrum software is installed; DMA is the DMA channel; and IRQ is the hardware interrupt. Set DOS_DEVICE = ?:\STW\SNDBK12.SYS DMA IRQ I/O 2. This is the statement remarked-out of the CONFIG.SYS file. where ? is the partition where the encyclopedia is installed; DMA is the DMA channel; IRQ is the hardware interrupt; I/O is the input/output device address for the sound card; 2 is the number of buffers assigned by the sound driver. The remaining DOS session settings are: DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION = ON HW_ROM_TO_RAM = ON HW_TIMER = OFF IDLE_SECONDS = 60 IDLE_SENSITIVITY = 100 VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION = ON DOS_HIGH = OFF INT_DURING_IO = ON VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION = ON VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP = ON 4. Select Save. The previous settings are the most stable for running both encyclopedia programs. Try the following if you still have problems running the encyclopedia programs: Corrupted Video --------------- 1. Make sure that video is set up for VGA. 2. Some double-speed CD-ROM drives do not work correctly with this program unless they are locked into single-speed mode. Put the CD-ROM drive in single-speed mode. Sound Problems -------------- Make sure all environment variables that the hardware might use are specified in the OS/2 AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Refer to the sound-card documentation for environment variables that the sound hardware needs. Also check the environment variables for device drivers that might normally be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file that can be loaded in the DOS_DEVICE DOS session setting. Supported Hardware ------------------ Supported hardware must be used. Some third-party vendors are providing OS/2 device drivers that enable their products to be used with OS/2. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
