DESCRIPTION

This document describes the setup for WordPerfect with DOS 5.1 and 6.0. 
It also describes some common problems.

RESOLUTION

Standard Setup for WordPerfect 5.1 and 6.0
------------------------------------------

DOS Settings
------------
WordPerfect uses a lot of system time when running in the foreground 
and background. To improve performance:

 1. Open OS/2 System.

 2. Open Command Prompts.

 3. Click-on either DOS Window or DOS Full Screen with mouse button 2
    to display the pop-up menu.

 4. Select Settings to open the Settings notebook.

 5. Select the Session tab.

 6. Select the DOS Settings... push button.

 7. Select OK.

 8. Change the settings as follows:
 
       DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION = OFF
       DOS_FILES                = 25 (required for WP 6.0)
       DOS_HIGH                 = ON
       DOS_UMB                  = ON
       HW_ROM_TO_RAM            = ON
       IDLE_SECONDS             = 60
       IDLE_SENSITIVITY         = 100
       VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION  = OFF

 9. Select Save.

10. Close the Settings notebook.

Potential Problems
------------------
* Black screen.
* WordPerfect does not open in a DOS session.
* SYS3176 error is received.
* System locks up when going from WordPerfect in a DOS session to
  another session or to the Desktop:

  While running WordPerfect, press Shift+F1 or select File from the
  Menu Bar to change the WordPerfect settings:

     Setup
     Display
     Text Screen Type
     IBM (VGA and Compatibles)

  Note: If your video adapter is either an 8514 or an XGA, try changing
        these DOS settings:

           VIDEO_8514A_XGA_IOTRAP    = OFF
           VIDEO_SWITCH_NOTIFICATION = ON

* No mouse or erratic mouse:

  While running WordPerfect, press Shift+F1 or select File from the
  Menu Bar to change the WordPerfect settings:

     Setup
     Mouse
     Mouse Driver (MOUSE.COM)

* Double mouse:

  Change the DOS setting as follows:

     MOUSE_EXCLUSIVE_ACCESS = ON


Fax Setup for WordPerfect 6.0
-----------------------------
 1. Add these DOS settings to those listed in step 7 above:

       COM_HOLD                 = ON
       COM_SELECT               = (COM Port for fax modem)
       DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION = ON
       HW_TIMER                 = ON
       INT_DURING_IO            = ON

 2. Using a text editor, create the WP.BAT file the following statements:

       FAXDIR.EXE
       FAXB.COM
       WP.EXE

    Save the file in the WordPerfect directory.

    The first two files load the fax drivers into DOS. The WP.EXE file
    starts WordPerfect. Some modems need to be on before the program is
    started so the fax service can recognize the modem. This usually
    applies to external modems; internal modems are always on.

 3. Open the Settings notebook for WP.BAT.

 4. In the Path and file name field, type C:\WP60\WP.BAT.

 5. Close the Settings notebook.

 6. Open the Settings notebook for WP.EXE.

 7. Select the Session tab; then click-on the DOS Full Screen button.
    (WordPerfect 6.0 is supported only in a full-screen session.)

 8. Close the Settings notebook.

 9. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file in the OS/2 root directory and change the
    following statements as shown:

      PRIORITY_DISK_IO = NO
      MAXWAIT          = 1

10. Save and exit the file; then restart your system.
