OSDIBMGR - INSTALLING BOOT MANAGER ON AN OS/2 PRELOAD *76 01/04/96 ======================================================================= Installing Boot Manager on an OS/2 Preload *76 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedure ------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes how to install Boot Manager on an OS/2 Preload *76 system. RESOLUTION Create Utility Diskettes ------------------------ 1. Open Welcome. 2. Open Configuration Tools. 3. Select Create Utility Diskettes (you need 2 diskettes). Back Up the System ------------------ 1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes. 2. Insert Utility Diskette 1 in drive A. 3. At the A:\ prompt, type BACKUP C: A: /S and press Enter. 4. Insert diskettes as prompted. Delete Current Partitions ------------------------- 1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes. 2. Insert Utility Diskette 1 into drive A. 3. At the A:\ prompt, type FDISK and press Enter. 4. Highlight Current OS/2 Partition press Enter. 5. Select Delete Partition and press Enter. 6. Highlight Free Space Partition and press Enter. 7. Select Install Boot Manager and press Enter. 8. Select at Start of Free Space and press Enter. 9. If you have an additional partition labeled "type FE," select it and press Enter. 10. Select Delete Partition and press Enter. You now should have 2 partitions, one for Boot Manager and one of free space. If you don't, repeat the process. Create New Partitions for the Operating System ---------------------------------------------- 1. Highlight Free Space Partition and press Enter. 2. Select Create Partition and press Enter. 3. Set the size for the partition and press Enter. OS/2 needs 60 MB for Preload. 4. Select Primary for the partition type and press Enter. 5. Highlight Create partition at start of free space and press Enter. 6. Highlight the newly created partition and press Enter. 7. Select Add to Boot Manager and press Enter. 8. Type the name of the partition and press Enter. Repeat step 2 for each operating system you are installing. You might install an extended-logical partition, or multiple extended-logical partitions, for data by selecting Extended Logical in step 4 and omitting steps 5 through 7. Format and Install the Operating System --------------------------------------- Note: If you are using FDISK, skip steps 1 through 3. 1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes. 2. Insert Utility Diskette 1. 3. Type FDISK and press Enter. 4. Highlight an unformatted, labeled, primary partition and press Enter. 5. Select Make Startable and press Enter. Note: If a C partition is already assigned, skip steps 6 through 7. 6. Press Enter to display the menu. 7. Select Assign C: Partition and press Enter. 8. Press F3 to exit FDISK. 9. Select Save and Exit. 10. Restart the system using the Utility diskettes. 11. Insert Utility Diskette 1. 12. Type FORMAT C: to format the FAT file system; then press Enter. 13. Press Y after the warning screen appears. 14. Press Enter for no volume label. 15. Restart the system. 16. Initiate Install or Restore: For DOS: For steps 10 and 11, insert DOS installation diskettes in drive A and select Install. For OS/2: a. Start from the Utility diskettes. b. Insert Utility Diskette 1. c. Type RESTORE A: C: /S and press Enter. d. Follow the instructions on the screen. Repeat step c for each primary partition. If you have extended logical partitions, they can be formatted from an OS/2 command prompt when the procedure is complete. Activate Boot Manager --------------------- Note: If you are using FDISK, skip steps 1 through 3. 1. Start the system from the Utility diskettes. 2. Insert Utility Diskette 1. 3. Type FDISK and press Enter. 4. Highlight Boot Manager Partition and press Enter. 5. Select Delete Partition and press Enter. 6. Highlight the 1 MB of free space just created and press Enter. 7. Select Install Boot Manager and press Enter. 8. Select At the beginning of free space and press Enter. 9. Press Enter again. 10. Select Set startup values and press Enter. 11. Leave the default blank and set the default time to what you want; then press Enter. 12. Press F3 to exit FDISK. 13.
