OSDIBMPF - UNABLE TO LOAD BITMAPS AS BACKGROUND WITHOUT REMOVING EAS 11/04/96 ======================================================================= Unable to Load Bitmaps as Background Without Removing EAs ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Object Desktop includes 80 bitmap (.BMP) files that can be used as backgrounds for the OS/2 Desktop. However, when you copy these files to the \OS2\BITMAP directory, and then open the Properties notebook for the Desktop and select the Background page, these files are not listed as available bitmaps for the background. These same bitmap files work fine on systems formatted with FAT (File Allocation Table), but not on systems formatted with HPFS (High Performance Filing System). They also work fine on any filing system with OS/2 Warp Connect. RESOLUTION These files will be listed (and available) as a background if you remove the Extended Attributes (EAs) for each BMP file. Remove the extended attributes from each .BMP file you plan to use as follows: 1. Be sure the \OS2 directory is listed in the PATH statement of CONFIG.SYS. 2. Change directory (CD) to the directory where your .BMP files reside. 3. For each .BMP file you plan to use, type the following command: EAUTIL DATAFILE HOLDFILE /S, then press Enter. where DATAFILE is the name of the .BMP file that you want to remove the extended attributes from HOLDFILE is the name of the file that you want to put these extended attributes into (specifying a holdfile is optional) /S specifies to "strip" the extended attributes from the datafile. For additional help on using the EAUTIL command, type HELP EAUTIL. 4. COPY the modified DATAFILE to the \OS2\BITMAP directory; when you open the Properties notebook for the Desktop and select the Background page, the file appears in the list of available bitmaps. warp4 ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
