OSDICDRM - CD-ROM DRIVES COMPATIBLE WITH OS/2 2.1 01/10/96 ======================================================================= CD-ROM Drives Compatible with OS/2 2.1 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document provides information about CD-ROM drives that are compatible with OS/2 2.1, and includes a list of the drives. RESOLUTION When installation of OS/2 is from CD-ROM, 6 MB of RAM are recommended. If you are installing multimedia, you will need 5 MB of hard disk space. For Non-IBM Systems: -------------------- It is suggested that you disable turbo, cache, and shadow RAM. (Packard Bell users need not disable the above features.) For All Systems: ---------------- Set video to VGA mode, 640x80, 8-bit slot or mode if possible, and disable autosensing if you have the capability. Disconnect the modem, tape backups, network card, scanners, and other devices, for the installation. After installation, enable and connect all features and devices. The CONFIG.SYS file must have the following statements for CD-ROM drives: DEVICE=x:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q IFS=x:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q BASEDEV= /P:xxx where: x is the drive where OS/2 installed. /Q is quiet mode; no error messages will appear. If you want error messages to appear, use /V instead. xxx are CD-ROM parameters. A BASEDEV statement is required for the CD-ROM drive and the sound card. Note: Both OS2CDROM.DMD and CDFS.IFS must be present in the CONFIG.SYS file and the files must be in the OS2 subdirectory. If they are missing, add the statements to the CONFIG.SYS file and copy the files to the OS2 subdirectory. The files are in the bundled file, CDROMREQ, which can be found as follows: * Blue labels for OS/2: Diskette 10 * Salmon labels for OS/2: Diskette 12 * Green labels for OS/2 for Windows: Diskette 5 If the device driver is not listed, or if you need assistance, contact the vendor for an OS/2 driver. Note: If you're adding a device driver to Diskette 1 and the diskette does not have enough space, do a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1. On the COPY of Diskette 1, you then can delete the following files: * For a non-Micro-Channel system, delete IBM2.* files. * For a Micro-Channel system, delete IBM1.* files. There now should be room for the device drivers. Driver available via BBS in 1Q94 3. The SCSI CD-ROM drive was announced after OS/2 2.1 shipped and has been certified to work with OS/2 2.1. CD-ROM drive model does not appear in OS/2 2.1 Selective Install list, but is supported with the existing device drivers which ship in OS/2 2.1. The following table lists new CD-ROM drive model and the entry that should be selected in Selective Install list for the correct CD-ROM driver. Note: The new entries have been added to the Selective Install list in OS/2 2.1 Service Pak. Chinon CD-ROM drive must be attached to a SCSI adapter which is supported in OS/2 with OS/2 SCSI Adapter Device Driver (.ADD). Currently incompatible is the Chinon SCSI adapter which is typically bundled with the drive. Chinon is developing an OS/2 Adapter Device Driver for their SCSI card, but no date has been committed. 5. The Hitachi non-SCSI CD-ROM device drivers are available from Hitachi. 6. TEXEL 3024 CD-ROM needs a firmware upgrade to version 1.16, if you use the driver from SP (ServicePak) XR06200. Please contact vendor for the firmware upgrade. NONSCSI CD-ROM DEVICE DRIVER PARAMETERS Mitsumi CD-ROM Device Driver Parameters --------------------------------------- The parameters for the following CD-ROM adapter device drivers are described in MITFX001.ADD. This device driver supports the following CD-ROM drives: Mitsumi CRMC-FX001D Mitsumi CRMC-FX001 Mitsumi CRMC-LU005S Mitsumi CRMC-LU002S BSR 6800 Tandy CDR-1000 Parameter Definitions /P:nnn Specifies base I/O port address of the interface card. This must be same number as specified on interface card. /I:nn Specifies the interrupt request (IRQ) channel number. This must match the IRQ value selected on the host interface card. If this parameter is not specified, the device driver will use software polling transfer. /V Verbose. The device driver will display the device driver revision level and CD-ROM product identification information when you start the system. Parameter Examples 1. Mitsumi CD-ROM drive attached to Mitsumi host adapter: If the Mitsumi host adapter is set to a base I/O port address of 320, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=MITFX001.ADD /P:320 2. Mitsumi CD-ROM drive attached to Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD. For example, if the Mitsumi CD-ROM port on the Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD is set to I/O port address of 320, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=MITFX001.ADD /P:320 3. To enable interrupt transfer mode, which improves performance, the /I parameter must be specified. For example, to enable interrupt transfer mode for IRQ channel 10 at I/O port address of 320h, the line in CONFIG.SYS should appear as follows: BASEDEV=MITFX001.ADD /P:320 /I:10 Sony CD-ROM Device Driver Parameters ------------------------------------ The parameters for the following CD-ROM adapter device drivers are described in SONY31A.ADD This device driver supports the following CD-ROM drives: Sony CDU-31A Sony CDU-7305 Parameter Definitions /A:n Identifies a specific adapter, n. Adapter is specified as a single digit value which is zero based (i.e.; the first adapter is specified as /A:0). /AT:dd Sets the adapter type connected to the CD-ROM drive. Supported values are: 00 = Sony CDB-334 (default) 08 = Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 /P:nnnn Specifies base I/O port address of interface card. This must be the same number as specified on the interface If this parameter is not specified, the default port address for the host adapter is used. For the Sony CDB-334 host adapter, the default is 0340. For the Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 card the default is 1F88. /I:nn Specifies the interrupt request (IRQ) channel number. This must match the IRQ value selected on the host interface card. If this parameter is not specified, the device driver will use software polling transfer. Note: Some Sony host adapter cards did not ship with the plastic jumper switch to select IRQ channel on IRQ jumper block. You must obtain and install plastic jumper switch to enable the IRQ channel. /V Verbose. Device driver will display the device driver revision level and CD-ROM product identification information when you start the system. Parameter Examples 1. Sony CDU-31A CD-ROM drive attached to Sony CDB-334 host adapter: The Sony CDB-334 host adapter supports base I/O port addresses of 320h, 330h, 340h or 360h. If the CDB-334 host adapter is set to any port address other than the default of 340h, the CONFIG.SYS statement needs to be modified. For example, if the Sony CDB-334 host adapter is set to a base I/O port address of 360, line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SONY31A.ADD /A:0 /P:0360 2. Sony CDU-31A CD-ROM drive attached to Media Vision Pro AudioSpectrum 16 host adapter, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SONY31A.ADD /A:0 /AT:08 3. Sony CDU-31A CD-ROM drive attached to Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster 16, or Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD host adapter: The port address specified on the BASEDEV statement in CONFIG.SYS should be 10h above base I/O port address specified on the adapter card. For example, if the Sound Blaster card is set for a base I/O port address of 220h, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SONY31A.ADD /A:0 /P:0230 4. To enable interrupt transfer mode, which improves performance, the /I parameter must be specified. For example to enable interrupt transfer mode for IRQ channel 5 at I/O port address of 360h, the line in CONFIG.SYS should appear as follows: BASEDEV=SONY31A.ADD /A:0 /P:0360 /I:5 Panasonic CD-ROM Device Driver Parameters ----------------------------------------- The parameters for the following CD-ROM adapter device drivers are described in SBCD2.ADD. This device driver supports the following CD-ROM drives: Creative Labs OmniCD IBM ISA CD-ROM Panasonic 521,522,523,562,563 Parameter Definitions /P:nnn Specifies the base I/O port address of the interface card. This must be the same number as specified on interface card. /T:x Sets the adapter type connected to the CD-ROM drive. Supported value is: 2 = Creative Labs CD-ROM interface card (not Sound Blaster) Parameter Examples 1. Panasonic, Creative Labs OmniCD, or IBM ISA CD-ROM drive attached to standard Panasonic or IBM ISA CD-ROM host adapter: The standard Panasonic or IBM ISA host adapter supports base I/O port addresses of 300h, 310h, 320h or 330h. For example, if the adapter is set to a base I/O port address of 300, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SBCD2.ADD /P:300 2. Panasonic, Creative Labs OmniCD, or IBM ISA CD-ROM drive attached to Creative Labs Sound Blaster Pro, Sound Blaster 16, or Sound Blaster 16 MultiCD. For example, if the Sound Blaster card is set for a base I/O address of 220h, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SBCD2.ADD /P:220 3. Creative Labs OmniCD attached to standard Creative Labs CD-ROM host adapter (not Sound Blaster) : The standard Creative Labs host adapter supports base I/O port addresses of 250h or 260h. For example, if the adapter is set to a base I/O port address of 250, the line in CONFIG.SYS should be: BASEDEV=SBCD2.ADD /P:250 /T:2 General Guidelines for CD-ROM Drives and OS/2 --------------------------------------------- 1. CD-ROM drives supported under OS/2 2.1: CD-ROM drives are only supported with the OS/2 device drivers. If your CD-ROM vendor does not have these OS/2 drivers, you can download them from IBM PCC BBS at (919) 517-0001. Note: The Sony 31A device driver is available on IBM PCC BBS at (919) 517-0001. The file name is SONY31A.ZIP. 2. CD-ROM device drivers supported and supplied with OS/2 2.1: Hitachi - CDR-1650S, 1750S, 3650, 3750 IBM - CD-ROM I, II NEC - CDR-36, 37, 72, 73, 74, 82, 83, 84 NEC - MULTISPIN 38, 74, 84 Panasonic - CR-501, LK-MC501S Pioneer - DRM-600, 604X Sony - CDU-541, 561, 6111, 6211, 7211 Texel - DM-3021, 3024, 5021, 5024 Toshiba - XM-3201, 3301, 3401 3. If your CD-ROM Is not explicitly mentioned above: When installing OS/2 2.1 from a CD-ROM not mentioned above, the following instructions may allow CD-ROM to operate under OS/2. If unsuccessful please contact the manufacturer or supplier of the CD-ROM. a. Make the diskettes images from the CD-ROM (DOS must be present). Go to images subdirectory when started in real DOS and use LOADDSKF to make the diskette images (LOADDSKF filename A:). b. Disconnect the CD-ROM. c. Install OS/2 2.1 from diskette. d. Copy devices drivers (extension .ADD) to the \OS2 subdirectory (CD-ROM/Sound card). e. Copy the device drivers for the Controller/Adapter. f. Connect the CD-ROM and plug in Sound Card and Controller/Adapter. g. Do a Selective install of for CD-ROM (modifies the CONFIG.SYS). Statements in CONFIG.SYS that should appear: EX: DEVICE=x:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q IFS=x:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q BASEDEV= x: is the drive where OS/2 resides. All device drivers must be compatible with OS/2 in order to run.
