OSDICHKD - RUNNING CHKDSK FOR OS/2 WARP 01/29/96 ======================================================================= Running CHKDSK for OS/2 Warp ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION You should run CHKDSK on a regular basis as a maintenance process. It is most effective when run from diskettes. RESOLUTION You do not want to interfere with the Swapper. The CHKDSK command should NOT be issued when OS/2 is started from the hard disk, because the SWAPPER.DAT file is in a constant state of change, and CHKDSK might provide misleading results. CHKDSK might require several passes, because it cleans up primary structures first, and then cleans up secondary structures. The CHKDSK command with the /F parameter is used to correct disk and directory errors. When you use the /F parameter, no activity occurs on the disk. Therefore, if you need to correct errors on the drive from where you start OS/2, you use the version of CHKDSK on the installation diskettes or CD instead of the version installed on the hard disk. Also, use the version of CHKDSK on the installation diskettes or CD if the disk is in use or locked by another process. Procedure --------- 1. Shut down the system. If you're unable to shut down, turn off the system for 30 seconds. 2. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A. 3. If you performed a shutdown in step 1, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system. If you turned the system off, turn it on. 4. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert Diskette 1. 5. Press Enter. 6. When the Welcome Screen appears, press F3 to display the command prompt. 7. Remove Diskette 1 and insert Diskette 2, which contains the CHKDSK command. Note: If you installed from CD: a. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive and press Enter. b. Type x: and press Enter (x is the CD-ROM drive). c. Type OS2IMAGE and press Enter. d. Type CD DISK_2 and press Enter. 8.
