             CHKDSK Reports Cross-Linked Files in OS/2 2.1

DESCRIPTION

When CHKDSK is run from diskettes or when starting the system, 
cross-linked files are reported.

RESOLUTION

The locations of files on the hard disk are recorded by their extended 
attributes. Cross-linked files occur when two files are trying to claim
the same extended attribute. To correct the problem:

 1. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A and press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

 2. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert Diskette
    1; then press Enter.

 3. At the Welcome to OS/2 screen, press Esc to go to a command prompt.

 4. At the A: prompt, type x: and press Enter (x is the partition where
    you will create a temporary directory).

 5. Type MD TEMP and press Enter.

 6. Type CD TEMP and press Enter.

 7. Type COPY x:\DIR\FILENAME.EXT and press Enter to copy all of the
    cross-linked files into the new temporary directory (x is the drive
    that contains the cross-linked files).

 8. Delete the original files, not the copies you just made.

 9. Insert Diskette 2 in drive A; then type CHKDSK x: /f and press
    Enter (x is the drive letter of the cross-linked partition).

10. Copy the files back to their original location.

11. Delete all the files in the x:\TEMP directory.

12. Type CD and press Enter.

13. Type RD TEMP and press Enter to remove the temporary directory.
