OSDIREMV - REMOVING OS/2 2.X 01/24/96 ======================================================================= Removing OS/2 2.x ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION At times, it might be necessary to remove OS/2 from a system. For example, if you have to reinstall OS/2, you should first remove the existing operating system. If you installed OS/2 in a dual-boot configuration, it is important to boot back to DOS before removing OS/2. If you are unable to do this, follow the instructions provided later in this document. RESOLUTION To remove the OS/2 operating system: 1. Remove any hidden files that might exist in the OS2\BITMAP directory by typing the following. Press Enter after each. CD OS2\BITMAP ATTRIB -s -h aaaaa.* ERASE aaaaa.* 2. Remove the following OS/2 specific directories: \OS2 \SPOOL \PSFONTS \NOWHERE \DESKTOP (might be DESKTOP2, DESKTOP3, ...) \OS!2_2.0_D (OS/2 2.0 Workplace Shell directory) 3. Remove the OS/2 system files from the root directory by typing the following. Press Enter after each. ATTRIB -s -r -h OS2*.* ERASE OS2*.* ATTRIB -s -r -h EA?DATA.?SF ERASE EA?DATA.?SF ATTRIB -s -r -h WP?ROOT.?SF ERASE WP?ROOT.?SF 4. Run CHKDSK to clear up any extended-attribute problems that might occur: a. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A. b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system. c. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert Diskette 1; then press Enter. d. At the Welcome screen, press Esc to go to a command prompt. e. Remove Diskette 1 and insert Diskette 2, which contains the CHKDSK command. f. Type CHKDSK x: /F and press Enter (x is drive where OS/2 is installed.) g. Remove the diskette from drive A and restart the system. If you are reinstalling OS/2 2.x with the dual-boot option, you must be able to start DOS from your hard disk before proceeding. If you need to put DOS back on your system, you can either reinstall your DOS package, or do the following, easier steps: 1. Start the system with a DOS bootable diskette. 2. Check the diskette for the SYS.COM file. If it isn't there, copy the file from the DOS directory on the hard disk. 3. Type SYS C: and press Enter. (This makes the hard disk bootable again.) 4. If you have backup copies of the DOS CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, copy them to the root directory, overwriting the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. If you do not have backup copies, and you installed OS/2 in a dual-boot configuration, type the following to retrieve the files OS/2 saved. Press Enter after each. COPY C:\OS2\SYSTEM\CONFIG.DOS C:\CONFIG.SYS COPY C:\OS2\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.DOS C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT You should now be able to boot to DOS from the hard disk. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
