OSIN1201 - SYS1201 ERROR MESSAGE WHEN STARTING OS/2 02/02/96 ======================================================================= SYS1201 Error Message when Starting OS/2--All OS/2 Releases ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document provides information for resolving SYS1201 errors when starting OS/2. The information is for the general availability release of OS/2. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. SYS1201 - VMOUSE not installed. ------------------------------- This error indicates a problem with the OS/2 installation program if there is any MOUSE.* file on the drive where OS/2 is being installed. 1. Review the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file and verify that the DEVICE statement points to MOUSE.SYS in the x:\OS2 directory (x is the drive where OS/2 is installed). No reference to MOUSE.COM should be in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file. 2. Copy the MOUSE.SYS file from Program Diskette 1 to the \OS2 directory; then shut down and restart the system. 3. If the problem continues, unplug the mouse, wait a short while, and plug the mouse in again. If this fixes the problem, and you used the mouse under OS/2, you can try using the MOUSE.SYS from OS/2. This also is on Program Diskette 1. After Installation of OS/2 for Windows, the Mouse Does Not Work ---------------------------------------------------------------- You have installed OS/2 for Windows, and after you restart the system, the mouse does not work. When you are using DOS, the mouse works fine. If a DOS-based mouse device driver is installed, the OS/2 mouse device driver might not have been copied over. The solution is to unpack and copy over the OS/2 mouse device driver. The driver is on Diskette 1 of the installation package. 1. Copy the file MOUSE.SYS from the Diskette 1 to the \OS2 directory on the startup drive. 2. Check the CONFIG.SYS file and make sure it has the line containing MOUSE.SYS. If it is not in the file, use Selective Install to reinstall the mouse device-driver support: a. Open OS/2 System; then open System Setup. b. Select Selective Install. c. Select the appropriate mouse for your hardware, and then select OK. d. Select the Install push button to reinstall the mouse support. e. Restart the system. SYS1201 - COM.SYS not installed or IRQ not available. ----------------------------------------------------- If you have only one serial port and you have a MOUSE plugged into the port, you get this error. 1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file. 2. Remark-out (REM) the DEVICE=OS2 statements as follows: REM DEVICE=OS2\COM.SYS. REM DEVICE=OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS If you have a PS/2 or equivalent Micro Channel architecture computer, you should not pass any parameters to the COM.SYS device driver. Only ISA and non-ABIOS computers require parameters for serial ports greater than COM2. If you have an Industry Standard Architecture (ISA or AT) computer, you need to provide the CORRECT input/output (I/O) address and interrupt request level (IRQ) for serial ports greater than COM2. The parameters must match the physical settings of the serial adapters. Review the documentation that came with the serial adapter to determine how to physically change or "jumper" the adapter. If you have an internal modem and two external serial ports, try to set the modem to I/O address 3E8 and IRQ 5. Note: You can use IRQ 5 only if you have just one parallel port (LPT1). The parameter line is: DEVICE=...\COM.SYS (p,addr, irq) For example, if you have physically set up your internal modem to I/O address 3E8 (or COM3) and have set the physical IRQ level to 5, you would set the following parameters: DEVICE=x:\OS2\COM.SYS (3,3E8,5) If you provide an invalid address or IRQ, messages indicate that the "COMx" port was not installed or that the IRQ is not available. You should verify that the serial adapter (that is, the internal modem) is set up correctly. Three-Button Mouse Not Working Correctly ---------------------------------------- You have a 3-button mouse and the SYS1201 error message appears. OS/2 supports the 2-button mode on the 3-button mouse. If your mouse has a switch to change to a 2-button mode, change the switch. Otherwise, you have to get a 2-button mouse. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
