                      OS/2 2.1 or OS/2 2.11

DESCRIPTION

When you restart the system after installation, you get a blank Desktop 
and no system activity.

RESOLUTION

Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.

1. Set up ATI 8514 Ultra or Ultra Graphics Video Adapter:

   a. Make sure the ATI  adapter is set up as 8514 PRIMARY display.

   b. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file. Make sure it has:

         DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VSVGA.SYS 

      During installation, this is sometimes loaded as
      DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS and must be changed.

   c. Contact ATI for an updated ROM chip. The older ATI ROM chips
      return the incorrect monitor ID when queried by OS/2.

2. Run CHKDSK:

   a. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A.

   b. Turn on the computer. If it is already on, perform a shutdown and
      then restart it.

   c. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert
      Diskette 1; then press Enter.

   d. When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to get to an A: prompt.

   e. Insert Diskette 2; then type CHKDSK C: /F and press Enter.

   Run CHKDSK on all drives. If errors appear, rerun it until no errors
   are found.
   
3. Check the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file for duplicate INI statements:

   a. Start the system from DOS or a DOS startable diskette.

   b. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file.

   c. Make sure the SET USER_INI and SET SYSTEM_INI statements appear
      only once in the file. Delete any duplicate occurrences.

   d. Save and exit the file.

4. Set the video card to 8-bit mode and place it in an 8-bit slot.
   Refer to the documentation that came with the adapter for
   instructions.

5. If any of the preceding is not applicable or does not work, remake
   the Desktop:

   a. Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette in drive A and restart the
      system.

   b. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert
      Diskette 1.

   c. At the Welcome screen, press Esc to get to the A: prompt.

   d. Type the following, pressing Enter after each:

         C:
         CD \OS2
         ERASE OS2.INI
         MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC
         ERASE OS2SYS.INI
         MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC

   e. Delete the hidden file, WP ROOT. SF, from the startable partition:

      For FAT file systems:
          ---
      Type the following, pressing Enter after each:

         ATTRIB -S -H WP?ROOT.?SF
         DEL WP?ROOT.?SF

      For HPFS:
          ----
      Type the following, pressing Enter after each:

         ATTRIB -S -H WP ROOT. SF
         DEL WP ROOT. SF

   f. Delete the Desktop:

      For FAT file systems:
          ---
      1) Change to the OS!2_2.0_D directory.
      2) Delete all the subdirectories; then delete this directory.

      For HPFS:
          ----
      1) Change to the OS!2 2.0 DESKTOP directory.
      2) Delete all the subdirectories; then delete this directory.

   Note: If MAKEINI was run before, or ALT+F1 was used, other Desktops
         might have been created. Delete ALL Desktops; for example,
         OS!2_21.0_D is another Desktop.
