OSINDMS6 - INSTALLING MS-DOS 6 UPGRADE ON OS/2 2.X 02/06/96 ======================================================================= Installing MS-DOS 6 Upgrade on OS/2 2.x ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document contains instructions for installing the MS-DOS 6 Upgrade on OS/2 2.x. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. Start the system from the current version of the installed DOS, not from an OS/2 DOS session or virtual machine boot (VMB). Prepare the Uninstall Diskette ------------------------------ The Uninstall Diskette safeguards the files on the computer while you install MS-DOS 6. The Uninstall Diskette protects the files if SETUP cannot finish the installation, or if you encounter problems with MS-DOS 6 after SETUP. You can restore your previous version of DOS if you need to. Write "Uninstall #1" on the label of a formatted diskette that is compatible with drive A. If you are using 360 KB diskettes, you might need two diskettes. Label the second one "Uninstall #2." Disable Disk-Caching, Delete-Protection, and Anti-Virus Programs ---------------------------------------------------------------- Some disk-caching, delete-protection, and anti-virus programs conflict with SETUP. You do not need to disable the Startup command for the MS-DOS SMARTDrive program. Edit the DOS CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Remark-out (REM) each statement that starts a disk-caching, delete-protection, or anti-virus program. Save and exit the files. Disable Automatic Message Services ---------------------------------- 1. Disable any automatic message service, such as a network pop-up or a printing notification, that prints directly to the screen. These message services are incompatible with SETUP. 2. Save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. 3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system. 4. Run SETUP. After you set up MS-DOS 6, edit the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files and remove the REM entries that you added previously. Running Setup ------------- OS/2 Dual Boot -------------- 1. Start the system in DOS, not an OS/2 DOS session or VMB. 2. Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B. 3. At the DOS C:> command prompt, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP and press Enter. 4. MS-DOS 6 finds non MS-DOS operating-system files (OS/2) on the drive and prompts you to remove the files from the hard disk. If you choose to remove the files, MS-DOS 6 re-partitions the entire first hard disk as one MS-DOS partition, removing OS/2 from the system. Select Do not remove the files. 5. MS-DOS warns that the "Operating system on the drive (OS/2) may be disabled." Ignore this message. Select Continue Setup. 6. Follow the prompts on the screen. If you have questions about the procedures or options, press F1 for Help. 7. When SETUP prompts for the Uninstall diskettes, insert them in drive A. 8. When SETUP is complete, restart the system. The system should start in MS-DOS 6. 9. Type BOOT /OS2 and press Enter to go to the OS/2 partition. 10. Copy COMMAND.COM from the C:\DOS directory to the root directory. This lets you boot back to DOS from OS/2. Note: SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory named OLD_DOS.x. If you are sure you do not want to restore your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x directory and its files by typing DELOLDOS at the command prompt. OS/2 Boot Manager ----------------- 1. Start the system in DOS, not an OS/2 DOS session or VMB. 2. Insert MS-DOS 6 SETUP Diskette 1 in drive A or B. 3. At the DOS C:> command prompt, type A:SETUP or B:SETUP and press Enter. (Do not install directly from A or B). 4. MS-DOS 6 finds non MS-DOS partition and issues: This partition will not be available when using MS-DOS 6. Ignore this message. Select Continue Setup. 5. Follow the prompts on the screen. If you have questions about the procedures or options, press F1 for Help. 6. When SETUP prompts for the Uninstall diskettes, insert them in drive A. Note: SETUP places your previous DOS files in a directory named OLD_DOS.x. If you are sure you do not want to restore your previous version of DOS, you can delete the OLD_DOS.x directory and its files by typing DELOLDOS at the command prompt. To Make the OS/2 Boot Manager Partition Active Again ---------------------------------------------------- 1. At the MS-DOS 6 C:> command prompt, type FDISK and press Enter. The FDISK Option screen appears. 2. Select 2 and press Enter. The Set Active Partition screen appears. The Boot Manager partition appears as a 1 MB non-MS-DOS partition. 3. Select the number that corresponds with the Boot Manager partition; then press Enter. 4. When the confirmation screen appears, press Esc. The FDISK Option screen appears. 5. Press Esc to exit FDISK. 6. Restart your computer. Your Boot Manager should be active. WARNING *************************** At the end of the installation process, Microsoft's DOS 6.0 Installation program suggests that you run the "Microsoft DEFRAG" and the "Microsoft DOUBLE SPACE" utilities. These are NOT compatible with the OS/2 environment, and might cause OS/2 data loss if run in partitions that are accessible by OS/2 while running in the Microsoft DOS 6.0 environment. Microsoft DOS 6.0 utilities that perform direct diskette input and output (for example, Interlink and Undelete) are NOT supported under OS/2. These utilities compromise the OS/2 file system. *************************** If you followed the above steps and are still having an installation problem with MS-DOS 6, but not with OS/2, contact the Microsoft Corporation Technical Support Center. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
