OSINFSRV - BACKING OUT OF FIXPAKS USING FSERVICE 06/14/96 ======================================================================= Backing Out of FixPaks using FService ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Unable to get to the Desktop after applying a FixPak; unable to use SERVICE.EXE to back out of the FixPak. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup copy of any file you intend to change. 1. Restart the system, using the OS/2 Installation Diskette. 2. When prompted, insert OS/2 Installation Diskette 1. At the Welcome screen, press F3 to escape to a command prompt. 3. Change to the \OS2 directory on the hard drive. 4. Insert Corrective Service Startup Diskette 2. 5. Remove the read-only attribute from RESPONSE.FIL: ATTRIB -R A:RESPONSE.FIL 6. Using an editor, modify RESPONSE.FIL: a. In the first section (which says this is a sample response file for applying service), begin each line with asterisks (*), as in the following example: * * This is a sample response file to be used when applying service * for the first time, using FSERVICE when there is no existing * archive of the product being serviced. * It will service all partitions, and place an archive in each * partition. It does not take a backup of changed files. * * :LOGFILE C:\OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG * :FLAGS REPLACE_PROTECTED REPLACE_NEWER * :SOURCE A:\ * :SERVICE * :SYSLEVEL \OS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.OS2 * :ARCHIVE \ARCHIVE * :SERVICE * :SYSLEVEL \MMOS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.MPM * :ARCHIVE \ARCHIVEM * * End of sample SERVICE response file without backup. b. In the section where it says "this is a sample response file for backing out to archive level", move the ":" to the left in the first column, as in the following example: * This is a sample response file to be used when backing out to the * archive level of a product. * :LOGFILE C:\OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG :TARGET ARCHIVE :BACKOUT :SYSLEVEL C:\OS2\INSTALL\SYSLEVEL.OS2 * * End of sample BACKOUT to archive response file. * c. If you selected the defaults during installation of the FixPak, then proceed to step e., below. Otherwise, go to step d. d. Put the correct path to your archive directory and SYSLEVEL.OS2 files. e. Save the file and exit. 7. Shut down and restart your system with the Corrective Service Startup Diskette 1. Insert Corrective Service Startup Diskette 2 when the system prompts you for it.
