OSINJOSH - SYS0038 DURING INSTALLATION BECAUSE OF JOSHI/YOSHI VIRUS - OS/2 WARP 01/05/96 ======================================================================= SYS0038 during Installation because of Joshi/Yoshi Virus - OS/2 Warp ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedure ------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION During installation of OS/2 Warp 3.0, the system locks up, and the following message is received: SYS0038: System cannot find the ... device. The system also locks up during the first restart. You might hear a beep when you insert Diskette 7 after the restart. RESOLUTION The problem is caused by the Joshi or Yoshi virus. On systems infected with the Joshi virus, installation fails. You have to remove the files infected by the virus. When dealing with the Joshi virus, always turn the system off before restarting. If you press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the Joshi virus remains in control. If the Installation Diskette is write-enabled, it becomes infected if Joshi is active in memory. If the Installation Diskette is in drive A and you start installation by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, the virus also intercepts reads during startup (MBR on hard disk; diskette boot record on diskettes) and presents the original, uninfected boot record to the program that is reading the boot record. This works fine under DOS, but when OS/2 is started from the Installation Diskette, when OS/2 gets control, the virus cannot intercept reads of the boot record, so any program that looks at the boot record sees the Joshi virus. If the Installation program is looking for a serial number or name field in the boot record of the diskette, the same field might be different in the boot record of a diskette infected with the Joshi virus. If you have a virus checker, use an uninfected system and check all installation diskettes for viruses. You can order a virus checker from IBM by calling 1-800-551-3579. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
