OSINKEYF - ARCHIVING AND RESTORING OS/2 WARP DESKTOP AND OTHER KEY FILES 01/24/96 ======================================================================= Archiving and Restoring OS/2 Warp Desktop and Other Key Files ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Information for archiving OS/2 Warp Desktop files. RESOLUTION Creating an Archive ------------------- 1. Point to an open area on the Desktop and click mouse button 2. The pop-up menu appears. 2. Select Settings to open the Settings notebook. 3. Select the Archive tab. 4. Check the box next to Create archive at each system restart. You also can create another directory on a different drive or partition and change the path of the archive location on this notebook page. 5. Close the notebook. 6. Shut down and then restart the system. Retrieving an Archive --------------------- 1. Turn on the system. If the system is already on, perform a shutdown and then press Ctrl+Alt+Del. 2. When the small white box appears in the upper-left corner, press Alt+F1. 3. At the Recovery Choices screen, select the number next to the archive you want to retrieve. Each archive lists the time and date it was created. Note: After creating an archive, deselect Create archive at each system restart in the Settings Notebook. It takes longer for the system to start when this is checked. You should create an archive only when you have done a lot of customization. Files Backed Up during Archive Creation --------------------------------------- When an archive is created and the system is restarted, OS/2 Warp backs up the following files: OS2.INI OS2SYS.INI CONFIG.SYS STARTUP.CMD AUTOEXEC.BAT OS2INIT.CMD Backing Up Custom Files when Creating an Archive ------------------------------------------------ You must add the custom files to the OS2.KEY file before they can be backed up: 1. Open an OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen session. 2. At the command prompt, type CD OS2\ARCHIVES and press Enter. 3. Type ATTRIB -R OS2.KEY and press Enter. 4. Type E OS2.KEY and press Enter to edit OS2.KEY. The following files are listed: KEYFILE:OS2.INI KEYFILE:OS2SYS.INI KEYFILE:C:\CONFIG.SYS KEYFILE:C:\STARTUP.CMD KEYFILE:C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT KEYFILE:C:\OS2INIT.CMD 5. Go to the end of the KEYFILE:C:\OSINIT.CMD line and press Enter. 6. Add the following line: KEYFILE:\drive:\path\filename For example: KEYFILE:D:\MYDIR\MYFILE.CMD 7. Save and exit the file. 8.
