OSINMAPD - HARD-DISK MAPPING FOR OS/2 01/29/96 ======================================================================= Hard-Disk Mapping for OS/2 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes mapping of hard disks for OS/2. RESOLUTION At system startup time, only one primary partition can be accessible (active) on each hard disk. On the other hand, all the logical drives within the extended partition are accessible, provided their file-system formats are compatible with the starting operating system. For example, assume you have DOS 6.1 in one primary partition and OS/2 Warp in another, and one of your logical drives is formatted for FAT and contains a variety of DOS programs. You can start the DOS programs from either of the primary partitions. It also is important to understand what happens to the drive mapping if you ADD a hard disk AFTER you install OS/2. The logical drives on your existing hard disk will be remapped. Example of Mapping One Hard Disk -------------------------------- If you have the setup above and add a second hard disk to your system, the primary partition of the second hard disk will be assigned "D." The logical drives of your first hard disk will be remapped. The existing logical drive D becomes E, E becomes F, and so on, as follows: Primary (Boot Manager) = No drive letter Primary (DOS 5.0) | Primary (OS/2 1.3) | = C: Logical Drive | (OS/2 2.1) | = D: (OS/2 Warp) Logical Drive (Data) | = E: Logical Drive (Data) | = F: Example of Adding Another Hard Disk or Mapping Two Hard Disks ------------------------------------------------------------- OS/2 is in the logical drive assigned as "E." All references to the drive letter (for example, statements in your CONFIG.SYS and INI files) have to change. For this reason, it is preferable to place only logical drives on the hard disk that you are adding. See the following. Boot Manager |=No drive letter |Primary | Primary (DOS 6.1) | D:=|Primary Primary(OS/2 2.1) |=C: | |Primary Logical Drive | (OS/2 2.1) |=E: H:=|Logical Drive (OS/2 Warp) Logical Drive |=F: I:=|Logical Drive Logical Drive |=G: J:=|Logical Drive ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
