          Using the Response File for Installing OS/2 2.1

DESCRIPTION

This document describes how to use a response file to install OS/2 2.1.

RESOLUTION

Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.

Disable Cache, Shadow RAM, and Turbo. (For Packard Bell systems, it is 
not necessary to disable these features.)

It is highly recommended that video be in VGA mode (640x480). Disable 
Autosensing, and if possible, put your video adapter in an 8-bit slot or
mode.

When using a response file to install OS/2 2.1, it is suggested that 
you make ALL installation selections in the response file BEFORE the 
installation.

Note: Always use the copy of a diskette; never use the original
      program diskette.

Copying the Response File to Diskette 1
---------------------------------------
 1. Unpack compressed files using the UNPACK.EXE on the diskette. Any
    reference to UNPACK should be performed from the hard disk.

 2. Make a copy of Diskette 1 and place the original diskette with the
    program diskettes (you will modify only the copy). Type
    DISKCOPY A: A: and press Enter to use the same drive as source and
    target, or DISKCOPY A: B: and Enter to use different drives as
    source and target.

 3. Type the following and press Enter after each to delete files from
    the copy of Diskette 1 (not necessary for CD-ROM installations):

       DEL MOUSE.SYS
       DEL BUNDLE
       DEL SYSINST2.EXE
       DEL IBM1*.ADD (for a Micro Channel system)
       DEL  IBM2*.ADD (for a non-Micro Channel system)

 4. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the copy of Diskette 1:

    a. Change: SET OS2_SHELL=SYSINST2.EXE
       To:     SET OS2_SHELL=RSPINST.EXE A:\OS2SE20.RSP.

    b. Delete DEVICE=\MOUSE.SYS.

    c. If you are installing OS/2 2.1 on a Micro Channel system, delete:

          BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD
          BASEDEV=IBM1ADSK.ADD
          BASEDEV=IBM1SCSI.ADD

 5. Save and exit the file.

 6. Insert the diskette containing the SAMPLE.RSP file in drive A. The
    file is in a compressed file named REQUIRED and is on one of the
    following OS/2 diskettes, depending on the diskettes you are using:

       Blue 5.25      = Diskette  9
       Blue 3.5 (L)   = Diskette 13
       Salmon 3.5 (M) = Diskette 11

    Unpack and copy the SAMPLE.RSP file to the copy of Diskette 1 by
    typing the following and pressing Enter:

       UNPACK A:\REQUIRED C:\ /N:SAMPLE.RSP

    This places the file in the root directory of drive C.

 7. Use a text editor to modify and save the file. The file contains
    comments that explain each of the installation options.

 8. Copy the modified response file to the copy you made of Diskette 1.
    Use the name OS2SE20.RSP; for example:

       COPY C:\SAMPLE.RSP A:\OS2SE20.RSP

 9. Insert Diskette 7 in drive A; then type the following and press
    Enter to unpack and copy RSPINST.EXE, which is in the compressed
    file, REQUIRED, to the copy of Diskette 1:

        UNPACK A:\REQUIRED C:\ /N:RSPINST.EXE

    This places the file in the root directory of drive C.

10. Insert the Installation Diskette and restart the system.

11. When prompted for Diskette 1, insert the modified copy and press
    Enter. Follow the instructions on the screen to continue
    installation.

Note: When prompted to insert Diskette 1 again, insert the ORIGINAL
      Diskette 1 in drive A.

Response files can be used to install the same set of options on 
multiple workstations. Make sure the workstations have the same set of 
options and hardware.
