OSINSNIF - NO PROMPT FOR MS WINDOWS DISKETTES OR NO WIN-OS/2 SUPPORT 01/29/96 ======================================================================= No Prompt for MS Windows Diskettes or No WIN-OS/2 Support All OS/2 Releases ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes what to do if one of the following occurs during the installation of OS/2 for Windows: * There are no prompts for Windows diskettes during installation. * You complete the installation, but WIN-OS/2 won't start. * Selective Install does not have an option for installing WIN-OS/2 support. * There is no error message stating that Windows is NOT on the system. RESOLUTION Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change. 1. Open OS/2 System. 2. Open Command Prompts. 3. Select OS/2 Window. 4. Type x: CD WINDOWS and press Enter to change to the WINDOWS directory (x is the drive where Windows is installed). 5. Type E WIN.INI and press Enter to edit the WIN.INI file. (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select Continue Loading File.) 6. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file: [Windows] [Desktop] 7. If the headings are present save and exit the file. If you get a message about no file type being selected, select Type and then Plain Text; then select Set. If the headings are missing, restore the WIN.INI file from a backup diskette or the system, or unpack it from the Windows diskette. 8. Type E SYSTEM.INI and press Enter to edit the SYSTEM.INI file. (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select Continue Loading File.) 9. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file (see step 7): [Boot] [Keyboard] 10. Type E PROGMAN.INI and press Enter to edit the PROGMAN.INI file. (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select Continue Loading File.) 11. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file (see step 7): [Settings] [Groups] 12. Type E CONTROL.INI and press Enter to edit the CONTROL.INI file. (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select Continue Loading File.) 13. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file (see step 7): [Current] [ColorSchemes] 14. When all the files are saved, close OS/2 Window. 15. Open OS/2 System. 16. Open System Setup; then select Selective Install. 17. Select OK at the System Configuration screen. The option to install WIN-OS/2 support should now be available. 18.
