Question 4 ---------- I am receiving a Trap 2 error during installation. What is the fix for this? If you are receiving a Trap 2 error during installation, this indicates a hardware memory problem. There is information available via fax to help you resolve this problem. Please call 1-800-IBM-4FAX and select fax index number 2036. Question 5 ---------- Do I need my Windows diskettes or CD-ROM when I am installing OS/2 Warp? During installation of OS/2 Warp over a system already running Windows, you will be required to use your Windows installation CD-ROM or diskettes. Please ensure that you have them available. If not, please refer to page 4 in your OS/2 Warp version 3.0 User's Guide. Question 6 ---------- I have a hard drive in excess of 1024 cylinders. Can I install OS/2 Warp? OS/2 Warp 3.0 must be installed on a partition with less than 1024 cylinders. OS/2 Warp 3.0, like DOS, must be installed within the 1024 cylinder limit to be startable. Use FDISK to make a smaller startup partition. Question 7 ---------- I am having system hangs and traps during installation on Diskette 1. What are the reasons for this? Installation problems on Diskette 1 are usually caused by unsupported hard drive controller cards, unsupported CD-ROMs, or in some cases, systems that may need a BIOS upgrade. Please refer to your hardware vendor for these drivers or BIOS upgrades. Question 8 ---------- What if I run out of space during installation? OS/2 Warp uses a temporary file called SWAPPER.DAT to simulate memory. During installation, this file is placed by default where you are installing OS/2 Warp. If you want to install OS/2 Warp on a hard drive with very little space, you have to move the SWAPPER.DAT midway during the installation. Follow these instructions: 1. Midway through the installation, at the blue screen that says PRESS ENTER TO REBOOT, press F3 for a command prompt. 2. Type TEDIT CONFIG.SYS. 3. Type /SWAPPATH to locate the statement that points to the swapper. 4. Change the X:\OS2\SYSTEM directory to a directory on another drive. 5. Press F3 to save. 6. Type EXIT. 7. Press Enter to continue. 8. At the first install screen, select FILE, and then COMMAND PROMPT. Type DEL \OS2\SYSTEM\SWAPPER.DAT. Question 9 ---------- I am receiving a SYS1200 error on OS/2 Warp startup which states, "DOS environment cannot be created." How do I fix this? To overcome this error use the OS/2 Warp Selective Install Utility to reinstall their DOS support under OS/2 Warp. Question 10 ----------- I am not getting WIN-OS/2 support after installing OS/2 Warp. What should I do? If DOS and Windows are not installed, they must be installed to obtain Windows support. After installing DOS and Windows, restart OS/2 WARP and run the Selective Install Utility. Choose DOS and WIN-OS/2 support. You will be prompted for your Windows diskettes. Once completed, you will need to shutdown and restart your system. Question 11 ----------- I am getting a SYS0005 error on Diskette 12 during installation. What do I do? If you are receiving a SYS0005 on Diskette 12 during installation, use the ATTRIB -R command to remove the READONLY attributes from files in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory (where C: is the drive that you have OS/2 Warp installed). Once in this subdirectory, the syntax for the ATTRIB command is: ATTRIB *.* -R Question 12 ----------- What should I do if I am getting system traps on my Gateway System or Motherboard with OS/2 Warp? Systems with Gateway Motherboards have power management features that cause OS/2 to trap. Try turning the power management features off and reinstall OS/2 Warp. If that fails, call the hardware vendor for possible BIOS system upgrade. Question 13 ----------- Why does the system beep on Install Diskette 7? If you are installing OS/2 Warp over an earlier version (such as OS/2 Version 2.1 or 2.11), OS/2 Warp may be trying to load an old driver. Look for old .ADD and .SYS drivers and delete them. Most obsolete drivers will be dated 1/29/94 or earlier. Look for these files in the root directory and all directories under (and including) \OS2. Question 14 ----------- I have a COMPAQ AERO Notebook computer and am having difficulty installing OS/2 Warp. I can install diskettes 1 through 6, but when diskette 7 is accessed the installation fails. Why? The COMPAQ AERO 25 and 33 MHz systems do not have an integrated diskette drive. A new BIOS from COMPAQ with revision level 11.01.94 will solve this problem. Contact COMPAQ at 1-800-345-1518 for this upgrade. This number is listed under "Servicing Your Computer" in the Setup books that come with all Compaq computers. For Internet users who can use the world wide web, the Compaq web server is www.compaq.com. The latest information can be downloaded from this location. Question 15 ----------- How can I improve my startup performance? You can do a couple of things to make sure your startup time is minimized: 1. Make sure that Windows Fastload option is turned off. This loads a DOS and Windows session in the background during startup. If you have less than 6 MB of memory, it is recommended this be turned off. You can do so by going into the OS/2 System folder, then System Setup, then WIN-OS/2 Setup. 2. Do not archive your desktop on every restart. You really should only use archive whenever your desktop customization is just how you want it. The Archive tab is located in the Desktop Settings notebook. 3. Use multiple CONFIG.SYS files to only load certain device drivers depending upon what you plan to do during a particular session. For example, the Internet Access Kit has several device drivers which, in low memory systems, can use a lot of the free memory available causing some swapping to occur. By having one CONFIG.SYS with the device drivers remarked out and one CONFIG.SYS with the device drivers present, you can choose during startup whether to load support for the Internet Access kit or not. See page 216 of the User's Guide to OS/2 Warp to find out how to create multiple CONFIG.SYS files and activate them in the Alt-F1 recovery menu. 4. Add SET RESTARTOBJECTS=STARTUPFOLDERSONLY to the CONFIG.SYS file. This will cause the Workplace Shell to only restart the objects you have in the StartUp folder or the STARTUP.CMD file. Question 16 ----------- While installing IBM Works, I get an EPFIE609 error. How do I get around this problem? The EPFIE609 error message means that the install utility of IBM Works was unable to successfully unpack the INSTALL.IN_ file. Following are the instructions when installing from diskettes: 1. Exit the IBM Works Installation. 2. Make a temporary directory (for example type, "MD C:\WORKTEMP). 3. Insert IBM Works Diskette 1 into drive A: and type the following: UNPACK A:\INSTALL.IN_ C:\WORKTEMP. 4. Change directory to WORKTEMP (for example type CD C:\WORKTEMP). 5. Look for a file called XXXIDLDS.EXE - where XXX is any three characters. 6. Execute the file as follows; XXXIDLDS /4=A:\ 7. Complete the installation. 8. Delete the files in C:\WORKTEMP and remove the C:\WORKTEMP directory. Following are the instructions when installing from CD-ROM: 1. Exit the IBM Works Installation. 2. Make a temporary directory (for example type "MD C:\WORKTEMP). 3. Insert the BonusPak CD-ROM into CD-ROM drive and type the following: UNPACK X:\US\IBMWORKS\INSTALL.IN_ C:\WORKTEMP (where X is the CD-ROM drive). 4. Change directory to C:\WORKTEMP. 5. Look for a file called XXXIDLDS.exe - where XXX is any three characters. 6. Execute the file as follow: XXXIDLDS/4=X\US\IBMWORKS. 7. Complete the installation. 8. Delete the files in C:\WORKTEMP and remove the C:\WORKTEMP directory. Question 17 ----------- I am attempting to install the OS/2 Warp Upgrade edition over my OS/2 version 2.1 or 2.11. The installation fails. What should I do? To solve this problem, call 1-800-IBM-4-FAX and request document number 3606. Question 18 ----------- Why does OS/2 Warp lock up on 486 Aptivas and some IBM 300 series computers? A problem in the drivers that access the CMOS on some IBM systems causes the system to hang. This problem has been fixed in newer versions of OS/2 Warp, but if you have an earlier copy, you must install a new VCMOS.SYS driver. You can find this file on most electronic services or through IBM. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
