OSINWI10 - UPDATING OS/2 WARP INSTALLATION DISKETTES 02/28/96 ======================================================================= Updating OS/2 Warp Installation Diskettes ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document provides information about refreshing OS/2 Warp Installation diskettes using the utility program, UPDTINST. This program should be used only if you are not able to install OS/2 Warp on your system. It will update the device drivers on Installation Diskette 1 for use during installation, and then update these drivers on your hard disk at the end of the first phase of OS/2 Warp installation (after Diskette 6 has been processed but before you restart to continue the second phase). If you already have installed OS/2 Warp and are having problems, contact IBM OS/2 support to inquire about a fix for your specific problem. If one is available, you will be given instructions about downloading the FixPak that contains your fix. The support phone numbers are in the Customer Service and Support document in the box your OS/2 Warp came in. UPDTINST will work for either a diskette-based installation or a CD-ROM-based one. RESOLUTION Before You Start ---------------- 1. Use DISKCOPY from either DOS or OS/2 to copy Installation Diskette 1. Be sure to use 2 MB diskettes; 1 MB diskettes will not work reliably when formatted to 1.44 MB. Use the backup diskettes when running UPDTINST, unless directed to do otherwise. 2. Place WARPINST.EXE in a directory by itself; then type WARPINST and press Enter. WARPINST.EXE is a self-extracting ZIP file, so the original, uncompressed files will be created in this directory. 3. Copy WARPINST.EXE to a diskette for safekeeping; then delete it from the hard disk. 4. Copy all the other files to another diskette for use during phase 2, if you plan to format the partition they are in during OS/2 Warp installation. The total space required for WARPINST.EXE and the unzipped files is 1.25 MB. Without WARPINST.EXE, the space required is 800 KB, so the device-driver files, UPDTINST.BAT and UPDTINST.CMD, and the README.UPD file will fit on a single 2 MB diskette. Insufficient Diskette Space --------------------------- Both 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch diskettes are supported. However, if you are using 5.25-inch diskettes (or if you have vendor-supplied device drivers), free diskette space is very limited. If the update process reports an error, you have probably run out of room on the diskette. Try deleting some unused files from the second 5.25-inch diskette. ATTENTION If you delete files, be sure to delete them only from the backup diskette. Keep your original OS/2 Warp Installation diskettes intact. This is especially important during the first phase of a diskette-based installation. After Diskette 6 has been processed, you are prompted to insert Diskette 1. At this point, you should use the original, unmodified Diskette 1, because the Installation program might want to copy one or more of the files you deleted. This will be the only time you will need the original, unmodified Diskette 1. Depending on your hardware and the file system you will use during installation, you can delete: * HPFS.IFS (This is already deleted for CD-ROM 5.25-inch diskette installation. Delete this ONLY if you are not using high performance file system (HPFS).) * TEDIT.EXE * TEDIT.HLP * If you are installing a CD-ROM version of OS/2 Warp, you also can delete one or more unneeded CD-ROM drivers (see "Utility Files" later in the document). Be sure to remark-out (REM) the corresponding lines in the CONFIG.SYS file on the backup diskette you are working with. * You can delete one or more unneeded diskette controller drivers (see "Utility Files" later in the document). Be sure to remark-out (REM) the corresponding lines in the CONFIG.SYS file on the backup diskette. If you still need additional disk space, determine if your system has an Adaptec SCSI disk controller card. If it is one of the following, delete AIC7780.ADD: * AHA 2740/2742 * AHA 2840/2842VL * AIC 7770 EISA/ISA SCSI chip Delete AIC7770.ADD if you don't have any of these. If your system does not have a Sony CD-ROM drive, you can delete: * SONY535.ADD * SONY31A.ADD * SONYCDS1.FLT If your system has a Sony CD-ROM drive and not a Philips CD-ROM drive, you can delete LMS206.ADD. If you delete any files: 1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on the updated diskette. 2. Remark-out (REM) any statements that refer to the deleted files. 3. Delete any SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 statements. (These are added by UPDTINST.) The UPDTINST program is designed to update only files that are actually on the OS/2 Warp Installation diskettes (phase 1), or the hard disk (phase 2), so you won't have any problems when you delete optional files. The deleted files will not be re-added. Update Installation Diskette 1 (Phase 1) ---------------------------------------- You can run UPDTINST from either native DOS or any version of OS/2 2.x. To run from DOS: ---------------- 1. Change to the directory that contains the unzipped files. 2. Type UPDTINST a: and press Enter (a is the diskette drive where you will be inserting Installation Diskette 1 that you want to update). 3. Proceed with the installation of OS/2 Warp using the updated diskettes. To run from OS/2 2.x: --------------------- 1. Open an OS/2 Full Screen or Window session. 2. Change to the directory that contains the unzipped files. 3. Type UPDTINST a: and press Enter (a is the diskette drive where you will be inserting Installation Diskette 1 that you want to update). 4. Proceed with the installation of OS/2 Warp using the updated diskettes. Additional Information ---------------------- * If you are going to format the partition that contains the directory with the unzipped files, you must copy the files, as well as UPDTINST.BAT and UPDTINST.CMD, to diskette before starting OS/2 Warp installation. You will not be able to run WARPINST again during the hard-disk update (phase 2), because DOS support for OS/2 Warp has not been installed yet. You might want to place WARPINST.EXE on one diskette and the unzipped files on another. * If you run UPDTINST multiple times against the same set of diskettes, you will have to edit the CONFIG.SYS file and remove duplicate lines containing SET COPYFROMFLOPPY= and SET WARPINST= lines. This will conserve valuable diskette free space. Update the Hard Disk (Phase 2) ------------------------------ At the end of phase 1, you are prompted to remove Diskette 6 (for a diskette-based installation) and press Enter to shut down the system. DO NOT DO THIS. Instead, just remove Diskette 6 if necessary and exit the installation. Do the following to update any device drivers that were installed in your OS/2 Warp boot partition during phase 1: 1. Open the OS/2 System folder; then open Command Prompts. 2. Select either OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen. 3. Change to the directory where the unzipped files and the UPDTINST.CMD file are located. Note: If you formatted the partition these files were in during installation, insert the diskette with the unzipped files in drive A and change to drive A. 4. Type UPDTINST x: and press Enter (x is the drive on which you are installing OS/2 Warp). The UPDTINST program will make multiple passes, updating device drivers in one directory during each pass. It will add to or create \OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG information for the updated files. It also will add a line to your CONFIG.SYS file similar to: SET WARPINST=UPDTINST 04 Feb 1996 22:50:01 Build: 8.239 You then can enter ECHO %WARPINST% from an OS/2 session to display this data when needed. You also can see it by using the SET command, but this will display all the environmental variables. Utility Files ------------- This section lists device-driver files that might be on the diskette. The actual files on the diskette will vary, depending on which version of OS/2 Warp you are installing, and if it is the diskette or CD-ROM version. "DISK" and "CDROM" indicate the type of drivers in case you need to delete additional files to make room on the diskette you are updating.
