OSINWN95 - PROBLEMS INSTALLING OS/2 WARP 4.0 OVER WIN95 09/25/96 ======================================================================= Problems Installing OS/2 Warp 4.0 over WIN95 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION When installing OS/2 Warp 4 over Windows 95, on the same partition, WIN-OS/2 fails to install. This occurs with either the Easy or Advanced installation option. WIN-OS/2 attempts to inherit the attributes of Windows 95 (on the machine); information from the Windows 95 SYSTEM.INI file is imported into the WIN-OS/2 environment. RESOLUTION To install OS/2 Warp Version 4 on a system with Windows 95, select Advanced Configuration to install WIN-OS/2 support, as follows. This forces the installation to ignore the existing Windows 95 environment and to install a clean WIN-OS/2 environment. 1. Select OS/2 Advanced Installation. 2. When OS/2 prompts you to choose which features to install, choose the WIN-OS/2 Support option and click on the More... button. This brings up the WIN-OS/2 Support window. 3. Select the Advanced Configuration option, and then click the OK button. The WIN-OS/2 Support - Advanced Configuration window appears. 4. Select Install standard WIN-OS/2 desktop, and then click the OK button. 5. You are returned to the Features Install window to complete installation. Once you have installed a clean WIN-OS/2 environment, if you still cannot open WIN-OS/2 full screen sessions (for example, if it flashes, the icon becomes cross hatched, or the mouse pointer changes to a clock and then returns to a pointer but no session opens), check the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\SYSTEM.INI file: 1. Open an OS/2 window and change to the drive where WIN-OS/2 is installed. 2. Type CD \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2; then press Enter. 3. Type E SYSTEM.INI and press Enter to edit the SYSTEM.INI file. 3. Look for the SHELL= statement. The line should read SHELL=PROGMAN.EXE. (It may incorrectly read SHELL=EXPLORER.EXE; change it to PROGMAN.EXE.) 4. Save the changes and exit the file. 5. Restart the WIN-OS/2 session. warp4 ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
