OSMKINET - DESKTOP VIDEO CORRUPTION ON IBM PC 750 PENTIUM-90 SYSTEM 04/04/96 ======================================================================= Desktop Video Corruption on IBM PC 750 Pentium-90 System ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedure ------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION The S3 864 chip set on an IBM PC 750 Pentium-90 system was disabled and replaced with a Hercules D902 video adapter that has the Tseng ET4000/W32P chip. The following procedure was followed: 1. Set the system to VGA using Selective Install. 2. Installed the Hercules adapter. 3. Downloaded the latest drivers for the Tseng W32P from the BBS to a diskette. 4. Opened an OS/2 Window session and changed to drive A. 5. Typed A:SETUP A: C: (C is the drive where OS/2 is installed). 6. Restarted the system. 7. Opened the OS/2 System folder. 8. Opened System Setup. 9. Selected Device Driver Install. 10. Selected Primary Video Adapter and then Tseng W32P. The system recognized the adapter, but the video was corrupted when the latest video drivers were installed. The display went black, and the system tried to create a PMI file. When the video returned, half the screen was solid black; the other half resembled a badly corrupted Desktop that was flickering. RESOLUTION When the condition above is reached, continue with the following steps. 1. With the Tseng driver diskette in the diskette drive, press Enter. This will continue the installation. You will see the diskette-drive light come on as the diskette is read. (This actually is the next step in the driver-installation process, but you couldn't tell because of the the corrupted video.) Note: If the computer beeps, it is asking if an older file should be replaced with a newer one. Press Enter. You might have to do this more than once. 2. When the diskette is no longer being read, the installation is complete. Shut down and then restart the system. The display will still be distorted. 3. Restart the system from a DOS diskette. 4. Change to the OS2 directory; then type SVGA ON DOS and press Enter. This will create the SVGADATA.DOS file. 5. Rename SVGADATA.PMI in the OS2 directory to SVGADATA.OLD. 6. Rename SVGADATA.DOS to SVGADATA.PMI. 7. Restart the system. The Desktop appears. 8. Open the OS/2 System folder. 9. Open System Setup. 10. Select System. 11. Go to page 2 and select the correct monitor and rate. Note: If drive C is formatted HPFS, copy SVGA.EXE to the DOS startup diskette; then type SVGA ON DOS and press Enter and create the PMI file this way. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
