OSMKTCP3 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT IBM TCP/IP 3.0 02/02/96 ======================================================================= Frequently Asked Questions about IBM TCP/IP 3.0--OS/2 Warp Connect ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Answers to frequently asked technical-support questions about the IBM TCP/IP 3.0 product. RESOLUTION If you require further assistance after reviewing the information in this document, please call the IBM OS/2 Technical Support Center at 1-800-992-4777 for options on obtaining technical support from IBM. Question 1 ---------- How do I set my Web Explorer to use a proxy server? Configure the proxy's URL in the Web Explorer's "Configure/Servers" pull-down. Enter the proxy server's URL in the Proxy Gateway field. Be sure to put a "/" at the end of the URL. Question 2 ---------- I cannot ping any resources on the Ethernet wire. What do I do? Change the frame types from Ethernet Dix 2 to Ethernet 802.3: 1. Open the TCP/IP Configuration notebook. 2. Select Advanced Options from the Network Page. 3. Select Next on the Interface connection. 4. Select Enable Ethernet IEEE 802.3 protocol. 5. Shut down and then restart the system; then ping again. Question 3 ---------- I receive the "IOCtl (SIOCSIFADDR) Invalid argument" error message when starting the system. What does this mean? This error usually points toward adapter problems. Examine the \IBMCOM\LANTRAN.LOG file for error messages generated at startup for the adapter. These errors often are caused by IRQ conflicts, shared-memory address conflicts, or other adapter-related items. The error also might be caused by not having LAN Interface 0 enabled. Question 4 ---------- I am unable to get a 3COM 3c509b network card to work, and there are no apparent error messages displayed. What do I do? Use the Etherdisk that was supplied with the card to turn off the "plug and play" capabilities of the card. Make note of the I/O address for the card and enter it in the driver parameters for the 3COM card in Multi-Protocol Transport Services (MPTS). Question 5 ---------- I am unable to send mail through UltiMail from a workstation that is connected to the Internet only through a SLIP connection. What do I do? APAR IC10390 describes the solution for this problem. The procedure to check if this APAR is installed in your system is to establish a slip connection and type HOSTNAME at a command line. If nothing is returned, install APAR IC10390. This fix is available through anonymous ftp from ps.software.ibm.com. Change the directory to /ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v3.0os2. Question 6 ---------- How do I run the TCP/IP 2.0 Extended Kit on top of TCP/IP 3.0? There are three requisite fixes that must be applied. Apply PN69745 for NFS, PN69747 for DNS, and PN70086 for PMX. These are all available through anonymous ftp from ps.software.ibm.com. Change the directory to /ps/products/tcpip/fixes/v2.0os2. Question 7 ---------- How do I perform a basic TCP/IP configuration for a LAN? To configure your workstation for TCP/IP, you must have your IP address, subnet mask, default router (if one exists), nameserver (if one exists), and a host name from your network administrator. To configure: 1. Open the TCP/IP Configuration notebook. 2. On the Network Page, select LAN interface zero as the interface to configure. 3. Select Enable interface. 4. Enter your IP address and subnet mask. 5. On the Routing page, add the default router by selecting Add. Change the box that says "net" to "default" and enter the router's IP address. 6. On the Hostnames page, enter your host name in "This machine's hostname" field. 7. Enter the local domain name. If a nameserver is in place, enter its IP address. 8. Close the Configuration notebook. 9. Perform a shutdown from the Desktop. 10. Restart the system. Question 8 ---------- When using a redirected modem on a LAN, I cannot connect to Advantis or another service provider using the DIALER.EXE (IBM Internet Dialer) or SLIPPM.EXE (Dial Other Providers) commands. What do I do? This is a known defect. APAR IC10391 is available from the OS/2 Technical Support Center.
