OSMMARIA - INSTALLING THE PROMETHEUS AUDIO DEVICE DRIVER ON AN IBM APTIVA SYSTEM WITH OS/2 WARP 03/06/96 ======================================================================= Installing the Prometheus Audio Device Driver on an IBM Aptiva System with OS/2 Warp ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedure ------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Aptiva systems with an Aria Sound Card require the Prometheus Audio Device Driver (ARIA16). Without it, there is no sound under OS/2, and Windows seamless applications open but disappear and are not in the window Task List. RESOLUTION Download the ARIA16.ZIP file from the IBM PCC BBS (919-517-0001), CompuServe, or Prodigy. Note: Be sure to read the README file before applying the FixPak. You will need a copy of PKUNZIP.EXE or UNZIP.EXE to extract the ZIP files. Downloading the FixPak Files from the PCC BBS --------------------------------------------- 1. Dial 919-517-0001. If you cannot make a connection, contact your local IBM branch office. When you connect to the BBS, you are asked for the following information: Name (F): First Name Name (L): Last Name Password: Create a password 2. Press D on the New User Main Menu and then type the name of the FixPak file (ARIA16.ZIP) to download. 3. Select N,8,1 as the communications protocol. 4. Continue until all required files are on your system. If you are still having problems after reading the README, call OS/2 Technical Support. Prometheus Audio Device Driver (ARIA16) Aptiva Installation ----------------------------------------------------------- This section provides information for installing the ARIA16 Audio Device Drivers for OS/2 on an IBM Aptiva. Setup ----- Installation requires OS/2 Warp Version 3.0 or later. This device driver requires the IBM OS/2 Aptiva Update diskette. To obtain the diskette, call IBM Support at 1-800-765-4747 (U.S.) or 1-800-565-3344 (Canada). Select the following options: 1 - Software problem 1 - Quick-Help Tips 1 - Frequently asked questions on OS/2 and OS/2 Warp 1 - Frequently asked questions on OS/2 installation 2 - OS/2 Warp on the Aptiva 2 - To record a voice-mail message requesting the Aptiva Update, or call 800-772-2227 and request the OS/2 Aptiva Update Diskette. Note: Before beginning this procedure, make sure the Aptiva Update diskettes are installed on the system. 1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and change: DEVICE=C:\ARIA\BIN\SOUNDCFG.SYS C:\ARIA\ARIA.CFG 298 DEVICE=C:\ARIA\BIN\SNDSAVER.SYS /R298 To: REM DEVICE=C:\ARIA\BIN\SOUNDCFG.SYS C:\ARIA\ARIA.CFG 298 REM DEVICE=C:\ARIA\BIN\SNDSAVER.SYS /R298 2. Save and exit the file. 3. Open an OS/2 command prompt; then type the following, pressing Enter after each: CD OS2\BOOT ATTRIB -R CLOCK01.SYS ATTRIB -R CLOCK02.SYS 4. Shut down and then restart the system. Aptiva ARIA16 Audio Installation for OS/2 ----------------------------------------- To install device support: 1. Insert the Aptiva ARIA16 Audio Diskette in drive A. 2. At the A: prompt, type MINSTALL and press Enter. 3. Select Aria Audio System 16 and then Install. 4. Shut down and then restart the system. The Aptiva ARIA16 Audio Device Driver installation adds the following 3 statements to your CONFIG.SYS file (x is the drive where MMOS2 is installed): DEVICE=x:\MMOS2\TIMER0.SYS DEVICE=x:\MMOS2\ARIA16DD.SYS /B:290 /I:10 /M:330,9 /N:ARIA161$ DEVICE=x:\MMOS2\AUDIOVDD.SYS ARIA161$ The following parameters are valid for the ARIA 16DD.SYS driver: Parameter Valid Values Default --------- ------------ ------- Base I/O port address 280, 290, 2A0, 2B0 290 Aria Interrupt level 10, 11, 12 10 Midi Port 320, 330 330 Midi Interrupt level 5, 7, 9 9 Using Audio in DOS and WIN-OS/2 Sessions ---------------------------------------- To improve audio in DOS and WIN-OS/2 sessions, set the following DOS properties: AUDIO_ADAPTER_SHARING to Required DOS_HIGH to On HW_TIMER to On INT_DURING_IO to On VIDEO_RETRACE_EMULATION to Off XMS_Memory_Limit to 7000k Audio Concurrency Issues--OS/2, DOS, and WIN-OS/2 ------------------------------------------------- With a single audio device, it is not possible for two programs (device drivers) to use the device at the same time. DOS applications do not participate in MMPM/2 resource management. When DOS sessions use the audio device, other programs cannot access it. Problems -------- When opening a WIN-OS/2 session the "Midi Error" message appears. 1. Select Don't display this warning in the future. 2. Select OK.
