OSMMAUDA - WIN-OS/2 AUDIO PROBLEMS WITH PAS 16 OR SOUND BLASTER CARDS 01/30/96 ======================================================================= WIN-OS/2 Audio Problems with PAS 16 or Sound Blaster Cards OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION * Unable to use audio adapter from WIN-OS/2 environment. * WIN-OS/2 system sounds do not work. * Audio adapter is inaccessible to Windows or DOS applications. MMPM/2 for OS/2 is installed and can use the device. RESOLUTION Install DOS and Windows device support. The OS/2 installation does not install DOS or Windows audio-device support. Some Windows device drivers are shipped with WIN-OS/2, but are specific to a few versions of the adapters (for example, Sound Blaster Version 1.0 and 1.5). You can do the following steps to enable you to use audio from OS/2, DOS, and WIN-OS/2. The directions apply to the Sound Blaster and Pro AudioSpectrum 16 cards. Use the diskettes that came with the adapter to install drivers. 1. Install MMPM/2. 2. Open a DOS session; then using the diskette for the adapter, run the DOS Installation program: * For Sound Blaster, the installation program is INST-HD.EXE. * For Pro AudioSpectrum 16, the installation program is INSTALL.EXE and is on the diskette labeled PAS 16 Install Diskette. Depending on the adapter and installation utility level, the installation program might install the WIN-OS/2 drivers too. If this happens, skip step 3. 3. Close and exit the DOS session. 4. Open a WIN-OS/2 session; then using File Manager, execute the program from the diskette to install Windows drivers. For Pro AudioSpectrum 16, use SETUP.EXE. 5. Close and exit the WIN-OS/2 session. 6. Open a WIN-OS/2 session again. You should have audio. Notes: 1. The OS/2 PDD, DOS device driver, and WIN-OS/2 driver must access the device on the same DMA channel and use the same IRQ: * For 8-bit devices, use DMA channel 1 or 3. * For 16-bit devices, use DMA channel 5, 6, or 7. 2. When an audio device is being used by WIN-OS/2, the device is not accessible to MMPM/2. Equivalently, when the device is being used by MMPM/2, it cannot be used by DOS and WIN-OS/2 sessions. 3. By default, audio in WIN-OS/2 and DOS sessions is considered optional. You don't want to be prevented from running Windows applications because you can't play the TADA.WAV startup sound. 4. The DOS property, AUDIO_ADAPTER_SHARING, can change these requirements. When set to Required, on the first access to the audio adapter, the session requires the adapter. If it cannot gain exclusive ownership, an error message is displayed. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
