OSMMESSA - PROBLEMS WITH ESS 688, ESS 1688, ESS 1788, AND ESS 1888 AUDIODRIVE SOUND CARDS 10/24/96 ======================================================================= Problems with ESS 688, ESS 1688, ESS 1788, and ESS 1888 AudioDrive Sound Cards ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION When installing the AudioDrive drivers for the ESS 688, ESS 1688, ESS 1788, and ESS 1888 sound cards, the address chosen by default is 220. In many systems, this port address is already in use; it is usually (but not exclusively) designated for the network adapter. This address, available or not, is added as a parameter for the device driver in the CONFIG.SYS file. On the ESS 688 sound card this is not a problem, because this driver ignores the command line argument if the card is set to use a different port address. However, on the other cards, any of the following problems might occur: 1. The card is not recognized by the system if the port address is being used by another device or if the card jumpers are set to use another address (different from the address specified in the CONFIG.SYS). 2. Errors occur during startup, stating that the drivers for these cards (ESS*.*) cannot be loaded. 3. No multimedia sound because the card is not being recognized. 4. The system locks up on the ESS*.* drivers during startup. RESOLUTION The port address can be changed during installation, or with Selective Install after the installation is completed, as follows: 1. Open the OS/2 System folder. 2. Open the System Setup folder. 3. Open the Install/Remove folder. 4. Double click on Selective Install. 5. From the System Configuration window, select Multimedia Device Support. 6. Select the driver for the sound card in the system from the Supported Devices list and press the ADD button. 7. Press the Device Settings button under the list of Devices in System to be Installed. 8. Select a different port address from the list (start with 240) and click on OK. 9. Complete the selective install and restart the system. Note: The plug-and-play ESS 1868 card does not have this problem. warp4 ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
