OSMMSSBD - CANNOT CHANGE SOUND SCHEMES WHEN MULTIMEDIA NOT INSTALLED ON STARTUP DRIVE 09/26/96 ======================================================================= Cannot Change Sound Schemes When Multimedia Not Installed on Startup Drive ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION During installation, Multimedia files may be installed on a different drive (not on the startup drive). After this is done, however, the sound schemes cannot be changed from the default Desktop sounds. If the sound scheme is changed, no system sounds will be heard during any system event (during opening or closing a folder, for example). If the Desktop sound scheme is reselected, the system event sounds are heard again. This problem occurs because the system INI file is not updated to point to the non-default schemes on the different (non-startup) drive. RESOLUTION There are two workarounds for this problem: 1. Modify the INISYS.RC file and remake the INI files. Caution: This workaround may cause the loss of some system customization. a. From an OS/2 command prompt, type CD C:\OS2, then press Enter. (Where C: is the drive that OS/2 is installed on). Type COPY INISYS.RC INISYS.BAK, then press Enter. (This is very important, it backs up the INISYS.RC file) b. Type E INISYS.RC, then press Enter. c. Find the lines beginning with "PM_SOUNDS_..." There are four sections, each with 13 lines: PM_SOUNDS_DESKTOP PM_SOUNDS_GARDEN PM_SOUNDS_OCEAN PM_SOUNDS_SPACE d. Change the path to the sound files on each of these lines to contain the drive letter on which Multimedia was installed. e. Save the INISYS.RC file, shutdown and restart the system. f. When the OS/2 appears in the top left corner of the screen, press Alt-F1 to bring up the Recovery Choices screen. Then choose F2 to get a command prompt. g. From the prompt, type CD \OS2, then press Enter. h. Type COPY OS2SYS.INI OS2SYS.BAK, then press Enter, to make an unchanged backup of the file. i. Type MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC, then press Enter. j. Once completed, restart the system. k. Open the Sound folder (in the Multimedia folder) and select the desired scheme. Then press the APPLY button. All the sound schemes should now be available. 2. Manually link the sounds from the schemes to the system events: a. Open the Sound folder (in the Multimedia folder). b. For each event shown on the left of the Sound notebook, choose the corresponding sound from the list at the right. (The scheme sounds will be listed under the subdirectory with the name of the scheme) Note: This procedure is very time consuming! warp4 ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
