OSOT400 - CONNECTING TO AN AS/400 USING PM TERMINAL IN OS/2 2.1, 2.11 02/07/96 ======================================================================= Connecting to an AS/400 Using PM Terminal in OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes how to connect to an AS/400 using PM Terminal. RESOLUTION 1. Set up the AS/400 for correct asynchronous communication. The following is an example of such a setup: CRTDEVDSP DEVD(ASCPS04) DEVCLS(*LCL) TYPE 3101) MODEL(23) + EMLDEV(*TYPE) PORT(4) EMLASCII(*YES) ATTACH(*MODEM) + ONLINE(*YES) CTL(CTL02) KBDTYPE(USB) CHRID(*KBDTYPE) + PRTDEV(*SYSVAL) OUTQ(*DEV) PRTFILE(*LIBL/QSYSPRT) + INACTTMR(*NOMAX) LINESPEED(*CALC) WORDLEN(*CALC) + PARITY(*CALC) STOPBITS(1) MAXOUT(7) IDLTMR(40) + NRMPOLLTMR(3) FRAMERTY(15) + TEXT('ASYNC PS/2 Connection 04') Note: An ASCII controller is required on the AS/400. More information can be obtained about the hardware requirements from your AS/400 administrator. 2. Set up the PM Terminal: a. Ask your AS/400 administrator for the communication settings required to connect to the AS/400. An example of the settings follows: Baud rate: 2400 Data bits: 8 Parity: On Stop bit: 1 Handshaking: None Error Correction: None Terminal Emulation: 3101-20 b. Set up the communication parameters: Note: A modem connected to the system is required to communicate to the AS/400 or any other system or BBS. 1) Point at the PM Terminal icon and press mouse button 2 to get the pop-up menu. 2) Select Open; then select the Session tab. 3) Select Setup Profiles from the menu. 4) Select the Connection button. 5) Select the Add button. 6) Select OK to accept Standard COM. 7) Place a comment that describes this Connection object; for example, "Hayes 2400,n,8,1" (2400 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 Stop bit). c. Select the COM port: 1) Select the COM port to be used. 2) Select the Setup button. 3) Select the Add button. 4) Select OK to accept Standard COM. 5) Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices. 6) Select Auto-Dial to highlight it. 7) Select OK. d. Select the modem type: 1) Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices. 2) Select Hayes Smartmodem 2400 for this example; otherwise, select a modem that is similar to your modem. 3) Select OK. 4) Place a comment that describes this Modem object; for example, "Hayes Compatible 2400." e. Change the initialization string: 1) Select Device Initialization String. 2) Select the Change button. 3) Delete &T5 from the Initialization String. Note: If your modem has error checking and flow control, you might need to disable it, depending on the modem connected to the AS/400. Contact the AS/400 Administrator to see if error correcting (that is, .32bis/.42bis protocol) is supported by the modem attached to the AS/400. If you have an error-correcting modem and you need to disable this option, you can add &Q0 to the Initialization String. Refer to the documentation that came with the modem for more information. 4) Select OK. 5) Select Save. 6) Type a name for this Modem object (Hayes 2400). 7) Select Save to save this Modem object. 8) Select Close to return to the previous menu. f. Change the baud rate and flow control: 1) Select Communication Parameters. 2) Select Change. 3) Select the List Box button (arrow) to display choices. 4) Select 2400 as the baud rate for this example). 5) Select OK. 6) Select the Flow Control entry. 7) Select Change. 8) Select None for Transmit Pacing. 9) Select None for Receive Pacing. 10) Select OK. 11) Select Save As to save this Connection object. 12) Type a name for this Connection object (COM - Hayes). 13) Select Close to return to the previous menu. 14) An optional step would be to set up a file-transfer and telephone network profile. 15) Select Close to return to previous menu. g. Add a Session notebook entry: 1) Select the Session tab. 2) Select Add from the menu. 3) Enter a comment for the session (AS/400) 4) Select the List Box button (arrow) of the Terminal Emulation profile selection. 5) Scroll down to IBM 3101 - 20 and highlight it. 6) Select the List Box button (arrow) of the Connection Path profile selection. 7) Scroll down to COM - Hayes and highlight it. This is the name of the Connection object you created. 8) Select Add. 9) Type the complete phone number that you want to dial. 10) It is recommended that you select Display this dialog box at connect time. 11) Select Save As. 12) Type a session name (AS/400 2400 baud). 13) Select Save. PM terminal is now set up. 3. Try to connect to the AS/400. (This might require several attempts because of telephone line noise or other outside interference.) Notes: 1. You might want to change the definition of the buffer size in the terminal-emulation profile settings. You can do this after connecting to the AS/400 by selecting the Settings option, and then the Terminal emulation option; then change the buffer's definitions. 2. After connecting to the AS/400 and logging on, the keyboard might need to be remapped, or you can use the function keys by pressing and holding the Esc key and pressing the appropriate number. For example, F1 would be Esc+1. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
