OSOTCHKH - CHKDSK LOCKS UP ON A FAT PARTITION 05/14/96 ======================================================================= CHKDSK Locks Up on a FAT Partition ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION CHKDSK locks up on a FAT drive when run from Startup or diskettes. It might lock up without an error, report an extended-attribute problem with EADATA, or report extended-attribute problems with other files. The system cannot be started. RESOLUTION Important: * Generally, the following steps will allow you to get to the Desktop; however, the Desktop will be the default installation and you will lose any Desktop customization, because the procedure requires a remake of the INI files. * OS/2 applications that have created and written extended attribute data will lose that data. * OS/2 applications that have written their own data into the OS/2 system INI files will lose that data. 1. Insert a bootable DOS diskette in the diskette drive and start the system. 2. At the command prompt, type the following, pressing Enter after each, to delete the EADATA file from the hard disk: ATTRIB EA?DATA.?SF -r -s -h DEL EA?DATA.?SF 3. Insert the OS/2 Installation Diskette in the diskette drive. 4. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F and press Enter. CHKDSK will run successfully. 5. Change to the \OS2 directory on the hard disk. 6. Delete the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI files. 7. Type the following, pressing Enter after each: MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC 8. Shut down and then restart the system. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
