DESCRIPTION

During startup, the system halts with a TRAP0003. 

This is usually caused by a corrupt PREVIOUS.DAT file existing either 
in the root directory of the startup drive, or in the  \OS2\BOOT 
subdirectory of the startup drive.

The PREVIOUS.DAT file should reside in the \OS2\BOOT directory.
It is created or read at startup time when Hardware Detection is 
enabled (which it is, by default).

If this file should become corrupt, the trap will occur during startup.

To disable Hardware Detection:

1. Restart the system.

2. When the OS/2 appears in the top left corner of the screen,  
   press Alt-F1 to bring up the Recovery Choices Screen.

3. Press F6 to disable hardware detection.  


RESOLUTION


To repair or replace the PREVIOUS.DAT file and prevent the Trap error:

1. Insert the OS/2 Warp 4 Installation Diskette in drive A:, 
   then restart the system. Insert Diskette #1 and Diskette #2 when 
   prompted.

2. At the Welcome screen, Press F3 to get to a command prompt. 
  
3. From the command prompt, locate the PREVIOUS.DAT file (either in the 
   root directory or in the \OS2\BOOT directory).
 
4. Either delete or (preferably) rename the PREVIOUS.DAT file.

5. Remove the diskette from drive A: and restart the system.  

6. If Hardware Detection is enabled, a new PREVIOUS.DAT file will be 
   created.

Because PREVIOUS.DAT is ignored if hardware detection is disabled, no 
new file will be created in this case.

You can turn Hardware Detection on and off follows:

1. Restart the system. When the small white rectangle appears in the 
   upper left corner of the screen, press Alt-F1 to get to the Recovery 
   Choices screen.

2. Press F6 to disable Hardware Detection, or,
   Press F5 to re-enable to Hardware Detection.
