OSOTPUBB - DOWNLOADING PUBLIC FIXPAKS FROM THE IBM PCC BBS 02/06/96 ======================================================================= Downloading Public FixPaks from the IBM PCC BBS ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes how to download Public FixPaks from the IBM PCC BBS and other Internet access areas. RESOLUTION Instructions for Using the IBM PCC BBS -------------------------------------- IBM BBS Phone Number: 919-517-0001 Settings: 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity Terminal Emulation: ANSI or VT100 Note: The only time the IBM PCC BBS is unavailable is on Mondays from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. Eastern Time, for maintenance. Checking the Status of the BBS ------------------------------ If you have trouble connecting to the BBS, call 919-517-0095 to check the status. Logging on and Downloading Files -------------------------------- 1. When you connect to the BBS, provide the following: * Name (F) Your first name. * Name (L) Your last name. * Y (Yes) to register. * Y (Yes) for ANSI graphics (if appropriate for your system). * Password (reenter for verification). * City and state. * Model number of PS/2 system (if you are not using a PS/2 system, go to step 2). * Phone number (with area code). 2. Press Enter. You will be prompted for the following: * How did you hear of us? * Street Address: * City, state, zip: * How many times do you think you will call? * Do you make or influence PC buying for your company? * Will this support influence your next computer purchase? A Welcome screen appears. 3. Press Enter to read the news or No if you do not want to read the news. The Welcome Screen/Main Menu appears. 4. If you know the name of the file that you want to download: a. Type D for download. b. Type the file name. c. Choose a protocol. If you do not know the full name of the file: a. Type S and press Enter. Enter a search string, such as: 21WPSF.* b. When the file is found, type M to mark it. c. Type Q for quit. The Main Menu appears. d. Type D to download the file. e. Type M for marked files. All of the files you marked for downloading are displayed. In our example, one file was marked, so it will be displayed as: (A) 21WPSF.ZIP f. Select A to download this file. g. Select X modem for the protocol. 5. Select Autologoff to disconnect after the transfer. Searching Libraries for Files ----------------------------- 1. At the Main Menu, type S. You are prompted to enter a search string. Type a general string to begin the search. For example, type SVGA to start a search for an SVGA driver. Note: Do not use a wildcard character (* , ?) in the search string. 2. Type the number of the library for the search: 10: OS/2 Utilities 11: OS/2 Programming 12: OS/2 Graphics & Music 13: OS/2 Entertainment 14: OS/2 Communications Files 15: OS/2 Text Files 16: OS/2 Applications 17: OS/2 Device Drivers 18: OS/2 Bulletin Board 36: ValuePoint Files If you do not know the library number, type A for All. 3. Make a note of the file names as they appear. If the file you want is not displayed, try a different search string. Using .DSK, .xDK, .RAM, or .ZIP Files ------------------------------------- These files are in Library 10 (OS/2 Utilities) of the IBM PCC BBS. DSK or xDK ------------ Files with the .DSK or .xDK extension (where x is a number; for example, 1DK, 2DK) are in SAVEDSKF format. 1. Download file LDF.COM to get the LOADDSKF.EXE program to unpack files to diskettes. 2. Run LDF from the OS/2 command prompt. A program called LOADDSKF appears in the directory. 3. Type LOADDSKF xxxxxA: to create the new diskette (xxxxx is the file name). RAM Files --------- Files with the RAM extension require the LOADRAM.EXE program to access them. 1. Download LOADRAM.EXE. 2. Run LOADRAM from the OS/2 command prompt. A program called LOADRAM2 appears in the directory. 3. Type LOADRAM2 xxxxx.RAM A: to create the new diskette (xxxxx is the file name). ZIP Files --------- Files with the ZIP extension require the PKZOS2.EXE program to access them. 1. Download PKZOS2.EXE. 2. Run PKZOS2 from the OS/2 command prompt. A program called PKUNZIP2 appears in the directory. 3. Type: PKUNZIP2 xxxxx.ZIP to uncompress the files in the current directory (xxxxx is the file name). Creating Diskettes from the Images ---------------------------------- 1. Put all files in a single directory. 2. Type LDF and press Enter. This uncompresses LDF.COM and creates the file, LOADDSKF.EXE, which is used to put the diskette images onto diskettes. The diskette images have a .DSK or .xDK extension (x is the sequence of the downloaded diskette images, starting at 1. 3. Insert a blank, formatted, 1.44 MB, 3.5-inch diskette in drive A. 4. Type LOADDSKF IMAGE.DSK A: and press Enter. Note: Specify a different drive, if appropriate (for example, B). The first diskette image has the README.1ST file that provides instructions for applying the FixPak to your system. FixPak Files and Diskettes Required for FixPak Installation ----------------------------------------------------------- You must download the following files to apply the FixPaks. Some FixPaks have different Corrective Service Facilities than others. This table indicates the Boot Diskettes you need. SYSLEVEL Required for FixPaks ----------------------------- The following table shows cross-references for FixPak file types. Type SYSLEVEL at an OS/2 command prompt to display a list of products and their current CSD levels. If your SYSLEVEL does not match the file type, make sure you check with the Support Center before applying the FixPak.
