RESOLUTION ART Axtive Registration Tool (Imbedded Software Registration Application) Frequently Asked Customer Questions Version 1.7 1. What is software registration? The software registration tool was developed for IBM to enable customers to register their IBM software products quickly and easily. This registration will help IBM provide better service and support to you as an IBM customer and to keep you informed of new products, upgrades and release changes. This version of the tool is basically the same in all IBM software that includes it, but there is some local customization in terms of execution time periods and marketing survey questions for the registration and reregistration process. Also, the IBM product in which the tool is imbedded may change the appearance of the tool to the end user. The registration icon may be in a different folder for different software products, so the method for accessing the tool may vary. 2. When am I asked to register? Depending on which IBM product you are registering, you may be asked to register immediately or at a later date. If that time is inconvenient, you will be asked again in some predetermined number of days. With some IBM product implementations, you may always choose to register from the "Welcome Panel" at any time that is convenient to you. 3. What information is required? You are asked to input your name, mailing address, and telephone numbers. You may also have the opportunity to participate in a marketing survey. Again, this depends on which IBM product you have. 4. How is the registration sent to IBM? You have the choice of sending the registration information electronically using a modem (if present), by Internet (if functioning), by printing a page for sending via FAX or mail, or by giving the information to an IBM software registration representative over the phone. 5. What will be done with my registration information? This is determined by the registering customer or user. Your registration information is stored in an IBM database recognizing you as a user of the product you have registered. You are given the opportunity to tell IBM if you would like to receive future technical or marketing information concerning this and other IBM software products. Your registration information will not be provided to other companies or sold as a mailing list. 6. Describe each of the methods of registration. The most efficient method of registration is via modem if you have one on your computer. The modem registration method uses a preprogrammed telephone number (toll-free in most cases) to call the IBM Registration Center. Once you have registered, a registration number will automatically be sent back and stored in a registration record on your system. If you choose to send your registration via Internet, you select that option and then select Send Now. The registration software will establish the Internet connection (if available) and transmit your registration record. Please be aware that this method will only work if there is no security firewall in place in your office or home installation. If you use this method, you must provide IBM with your e-mail address as your registration acknowledgment and your registration number will be sent to you via e-mail. If you choose to send your registration via FAX or postal service, a single sheet is printed out with the correct mailing address or FAX number to send to. In some countries, including the U.S., the FAX number is a toll-free number. You must provide a FAX number (or mailing address if you register by postal service) to receive your registration number back. If you choose to register with a live operator, you will be provided a telephone number to call. This will be a toll-free number in the U.S., Canada, and several other countries. The operator will take your registration information and give you a registration number while you are on the phone. Once you have chosen a means of registering this is considered your preferred method and the tool will use that same means to communicate back to you. This is why you need to provide an e-mail address, FAX number, mailing address, or phone number when registering. All future product information will come to you by your chosen communication method. 7. What do I do with this registration number? If you register by modem, the registration number will automatically be inserted in a registration record on your system. Otherwise, you click on the software registration icon in the Utilities folder in the Programs folder. Then select the product and select "Enter Registration Number". You will be asked to enter the 17 digit alphanumeric field at this time. If you do not enter the registration number correctly after three (3) attempts, the registration tool will accept your last entry and end. 8. What if I have multiple IBM software products? Do I have to register all of them? Many IBM software products utilize this registration tool. Once you have completed registration for the first product, each product that uses software registration will find the same customer profile and use it for subsequent registrations. This means you only have to enter your customer profile information once. 9. I have returned registration cards for other IBM products in the past, do I still need to register? Yes, when you register using this software your customer profile will be created for the first time in the new customer databases. In the past, registering yourself as a customer of a particular product meant that the data went into a product specific database. Also, the registration data was often not time stamped. As a result of these two factors, IBM has decided that it is in your best interest to capture your current data now and update it using this new technology to avoid the confusion of obsolete customer data being presented to you with this registration methodology. IBM will be better able to build a complete customer profile on you and your company, including all products that you have registered. 10. Why has IBM chosen to use electronic software registration? IBM has chosen software registration as a result of customer surveys that indicated more customers would register themselves as users, if presented with a user friendly software registration tool. By making customer registration easier for you, we hope to mutually benefit from knowing who you are and what you need now. 11. I don't want to register right now. Can I wait? Yes. The software registration tool will remain dormant for a period of time, then ask you to register again. This process is repeated unless the IBM product has limited the number of times it will be displayed to you. You may register at any convenient time by clicking on the Registration icon. It is important for you to register as it will provide a record of your installation of the product, protect your software warranty and support, and provide a means for IBM to keep you informed on new technical and marketing information. 12. Once I have registered, will the registration tool go away? For a while. Whether you register initially or not, the registration tool will come back again after a period of time ranging from six to eighteen months and again in another six to eighteen months depending on which IBM product you have installed. The tool will ask you to validate your customer profile information and may give you another opportunity to answer marketing survey questions now that you are an experienced user of the product. In each case, this tool will ask you to validate your previous registration regularly for a period of time or until you reregister. 13. What if the modem telephone number for a specific geography changes? In this case, you may enter the correct telephone number into the Prefix entry box on the modem screen by first entering a ZZ (capital letters required) followed by the correct telephone number. 14. Have some of the telephone numbers changed? Yes, the telephone numbers change from time to time due to changes in format or area codes. For example the format for the telephone number in France changed on October 18, 1996. This was corrected in some cases; however, if it does not work for you, you will need to enter ZZ 0800 90 52 70 in the Prefix entry box in order to register via modem. The new number in France for registering by FAX is 088 90 52 69. The new number in France for registering by voice is 0800 90 52 68. Switzerland is changing its phone system on January 1, 1997. New numbers will be provided to IBM service when they are assigned. What are the contact numbers for software registration tool in the various geographies? (This information is needed in case the number has changed, but you don't know whether the number is correct).
