OSOTSWAT - SWAPPER.DAT FILE MANAGEMENT WHEN DISK OR PARTITION IS FULL 01/25/96 ======================================================================= SWAPPER.DAT File Management when Disk or Partition Is Full OS/2 2.1 and Above ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION The following message is received: SWAPPER.DAT is full (or partition is full) RESOLUTION When you start an application and there isn't enough available RAM to run, the Swapper file grows. When the application is ended, the Swapper file tries to return to its original size; however, it probably will remain larger than its original size. The Swapper file is used extensively in OS/2 Warp, which has improved memory management. The SWAPPATH statement in the CONFIG.SYS file controls the location and size of the Swapper file. This statement reads as follows (x is the drive where OS/2 is installed): SWAPPATH=x:\OS2\SYSTEM (2048,2048) The first parameter in the statement (usually 2048) specifies the minimum amount of free space (in KB) that can remain in the partition before a warning notifies you that the Swapper file has increased to a size that leaves less space than the specified amount. The second parameter specifies the minimum size to which the Swapper file will shrink. If the system runs out of disk space, change the location of the Swapper file: 1. Determine the new partition and directory for the file. Make sure there is sufficient space on the drive. 2. At the command prompt, type E CONFIG.SYS and press Enter to edit the CONFIG.SYS file. 3. Change the SWAPPATH statement to SWAPPATH=x:\ (x is the new drive). 4. Save and exit the file; then shut down and restart the computer. The SWAPPER.DAT file will be created in the correct directory. 5. Go to the directory where the original SWAPPER.DAT file was located (usually OS2\SYSTEM) and delete the file. ______________________________________________________________________ IBM disclaims all warranties, whether express or implied, including without limitation, warranties of fitness and merchantability with respect to the information in this document.
