          Handling Display Problems in OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.11

DESCRIPTION

This document describes what to do when you experience intermittent 
Desktop corruption or lockups when a folder repaints, either in VGA or 
SVGA.

RESOLUTION

If the problem occurs in VGA resolution, run CHKDSK, and check for 
hardware conflicts. Make sure the INI files are not damaged, and that 
the SWAPPER.DAT file has free space.

1. Note which video mode you are in. If SVGA, switch to VGA using the
   SETVGA command. If the same problem does not occur in VGA mode, it
   is most likely a problem with video. If it does occur, the problem
   could be a corrupted hard disk. Continue with the following steps.

2. Start the system with the OS/2 diskettes and go to the A: prompt. Do
   NOT try to access the OS/2 drive.

3. Insert Diskette 2 in drive A.

4. For a file allocation table (FAT) system, type CHKDSK x: /F and
   press Enter (x is the drive you suspect is corrupted).

   For a high performance file system (HPFS), type CHKDSK x: /F:2 and
   press Enter.

   CHKDSK repairs a corrupted drive.

5. Remove the diskette; then restart the system.

6. Open an OS/2 session and change to the OS2\SYSTEM directory.

7. Make sure the SWAPPER.DAT file has at least 5 MB of free space (15 MB
   is recommended). If the file does not have enough free space, you
   must make room in the partition or move the SWAPPER.DAT file to a
   different place on the drive.

8. Make sure the system BIOS is at the latest revision level. AMI BIOS
   should be dated no earlier than 5/9/91. PHOENIX BIOS should be dated
   no earlier than 5/11/92.

9. Make sure the INI files are not damaged. Check the OS/2 documentation
   for instructions. Before you delete the OS2.INI or OS2SYS.INI file,
   make a backup by renaming them. For example, rename OS2.INI to
   OS2.BAD.
