OSVIMA08 - SETTING UP VIDEO ADAPTERS WITH THE MACH8 CHIP SET TO EMULATE IBM 8514 ADAPTER 01/26/96 ======================================================================= Setting Up Video Adapters with the MACH8 Chip Set to Emulate IBM 8514 Adapter ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION Video adapters with the MACH8 chip set can be set up to emulate the IBM 8514 adapter using the 8514 device drivers. RESOLUTION The following ATI video adapters have the MACH8 chip set: * ATI Ultra * ATI Graphics Vantage * ATI 8514 Ultra To set up one of these adapters to emulate the 8514 video adapter: 1. Start the system with a DOS diskette, without memory-management programs. 2. Insert the ATI Installation Diskette in drive A. 3. Type A: and press Enter. 4. Type Install and press Enter. 5. Select Power Up Configuration. 6. Select Monitor Type. 7. Select Custom. Take note of the Warning. 8. Select 640x480; then IBM Default or 60 Hz (whichever is present). 9. Select 800x600; then NON-SUPPORTED. 10. Select 1024x768: a. Select the highest refresh rate the monitor can handle (see monitor specifications; if they are not available, select 72 Hz). b. Adjust the screen using the instructions on the screen. If you cannot see the screen, press Esc; then select a different refresh rate. The choices are: * 72 Hz Noninterlaced * 70 Hz Noninterlaced * 60 Hz Noninterlaced * 87.5 Hz Interlaced c. Continue adjustments until the screen is as you like it. 11. Select 1280x1024; then NON-SUPPORTED. 12. Press Esc; then select Y. 13. Press F10 to save the changes. (The monitor will flicker while the EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) is being programmed. 14. Shut down and turn off the computer; then restart it. 15. Press Esc until the Main Menu returns; then select Utilities. 16. Select System information. 17. Check 2MB of video memory; then press Esc. 18. Select Test. 19. Select Run All Tests; then select Just Once for the number of times to run tests. 20. Shut down and turn off the computer; then restart it. 21. Install the OS/2 operating system: a. Install as a VGA system. b. Do a Selective Install for the 8514. At least 2 MB of VRAM (video random-access memory) is needed, as well as a monitor that supports higher resolutions and refresh rates. Check the monitor specifications. Note: DO NOT run SVGA ON; it does not apply to this adapter.
