OSVIMA32 - SETTING UP THE MACH 32 TO RUN IN OS/2 02/02/96 ======================================================================= Setting Up the Mach 32 to Run in OS/2 ======================================================================= Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures -------------------------------------------------------------- DESCRIPTION This document describes how to set up graphics cards that have the ATI Mach 32 chip set to run in OS/2. RESOLUTION Video Cards with the Mach 32 Chip Set ------------------------------------- * ATI VGA Wonder GT * ATI Graphics Ultra Plus * ATI Graphics Ultra Pro * ATI Ultra Professional Set Up the Monitor ------------------ OS/2 2.x -------- 1. Select the monitor type as Custom. 2. Select the resolution you want and press Enter: * 640x480: Set to 60 Hz or IBM Default * 800x600: Incompatible * 1024x768: Set to 60 Hz or IBM Default * 1280x1024: Incompatible 3. Select the refresh rate and press Enter. (See the monitor's specifications for the vertical refresh rates. 4. Adjust the screen using installation commands; then press Enter. Note: If the screen is unreadable press Esc to return to the Adjust xxxxxx Mode menu; then select a different refresh rate. OS/2 Warp --------- 1. Select the system's monitor or a compatible one. If there is no compatible monitor, select Custom. 2. Select the resolution you want and press Enter: * 640x480: Set to 60 Hz or IBM Default * 800x600 * 1024x768 * 1280x1024 3. Select the refresh rate and press Enter. (See the monitor's specifications for the vertical refresh rates. 4. Adjust the screen using installation commands; then press Enter. Note: If the screen is unreadable, press Esc to return to the Adjust xxxxxx Mode menu; then select a different refresh rate. Set Up the Memory Aperture -------------------------- ISA-Bus Systems --------------- 1. Disable, if the system has more than 12 MB of RAM. 2. Enable and set to 96 MB; aperture should show as 100 MB. EISA-Bus Systems ---------------- Enable and set to 96 MB; aperture should show as 100 MB. Set Up the VGA Memory --------------------- With 1 MB of Video RAM, set VGA memory to Shared. With 2 MB of Video RAM, set VGA memory to 512KB or 1MB. Installing OS/2 --------------- OS/2 2.x -------- Install as an 8514 system, or install as a VGA system and then do a Selective Install as an 8514 system. OS/2 Warp --------- Install as ATI Mach 32, or install as a VGA system and then do a Selective Install as ATI Mach 32. Notes: 1. On OS/2 2.x, do NOT run with SVGA ON; it does not apply to this adapter. If the SVGADATA.PMI file exists, delete it. 2. The monitor must be capable of the higher refresh rates. Check the monitor's specifications. Set Up the ATI Mach 32 Card to Emulate the 8514 Video Adapter ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Start the system from a DOS diskette that has no memory management programs. 2. Insert the ATI Installation Diskette in drive A. 3. Type A: and press Enter. 4. Type Install and press Enter. 5. Select Power up Configuration and press Enter. 6. Select Monitor Type and press Enter. OS/2 2.x -------- a. Select the monitor type as Custom. READ THE WARNING. Be sure not to set up the monitor beyond its capability. Check the monitor documentation for more information. The ATI manual describes Custom Setup in the "Hardware Installation/Quick Setup/Custom..." section. If you are not sure what needs to be done, refer to the documentation. b. Select the resolution, as follows: Note: All resolutions, except Other... are supported with the Mach 64 drivers that come with OS/2 Warp. * 640x480: Select either IBM Default or 60 Hz (whichever is present). * 800x600: Select NON-SUPPORTED. * 1024x768: Select the highest refresh rate the monitor can handle. Check the monitor's specifications for refresh rates. If there are no monitor specifications, select 72 Hz. Adjust the screen presentation using the instructions on the screen. Note: If the screen is unreadable, press Esc to return to the Adjust xxxxxx Mode menu and select a different refresh rate. The choices are 72 Hz, 70 Hz, and 60 Hz noninterlaced, and 87.5 Hz interlaced. * 1280x1024: Select NON-SUPPORTED. c. Press Esc; then select Y. d. Press F10 to save the changes. OS/2 Warp --------- a. Select the system's monitor or a compatible one. If there is no compatible monitor, select Custom. READ THE WARNING. Be sure not to set up the monitor beyond its capability. Set up the memory aperture: ISA-Bus Systems --------------- 1. Disable, if the system has more than 12 MB of RAM. 2. Enable and set to 96 MB; aperture should show as 100 MB. EISA-Bus Systems ---------------- Enable and set to 96 MB; aperture should show as 100 MB. 8. Set up the VGA memory: With 1 MB of Video RAM, set VGA memory to Shared. With 2 MB of Video RAM, set VGA memory to 512KB or 1MB. 9. Save settings: a. Return to the Power Up Configuration menu. b. Press F10; the monitor flickers while programming EPROM. c. Perform a shutdown and turn off the system; then restart it. 10. Install OS/2: OS/2 2.x -------- Install as an 8514 system, or install as a VGA system and then do a Selective Install as an 8514 system. OS/2 Warp --------- Install as ATI Mach 32, or install as a VGA system and then do a Selective Install as ATI Mach 32. Note: Do NOT run with SVGA ON; it does not apply to this adapter.
